Leaving my puppy home alone during work

My workplace is fairly lax and has been allowing me and some other coworkers to bring our dogs in daily. I knew this going into getting a puppy, and felt comfortable adopting knowing I wouldn't be leaving him alone for so long every day.

All good things must come to an end, however. Apparently, our GM was told by HR that we need to start enforcing a no-dogs policy that nobody was aware of. Starting Monday, I can't bring my 5-month-old puppy to work anymore.

My partner works sporadic hours, and she will be home part-time with him some days, but there will be other times when he's alone for a full eight hours. My work is too far away for me to drive home during my lunch break.

I just don't know where to begin with that. He's never been alone that long. Any advice for keeping him occupied, making sure he doesn't get sad, and coping with our new separation? We've been attached at the hip since I adopted him in November.

We do have a cat who spends some time with him, so even while my partner and I are gone, he will not be entirely alone. But that's a cat, and not a human companion.
