Hello everyone, I have an 11 month old golden retriever, who was attacked by an off-leash doberman around 2 weeks ago. Luckily he came out without injuries thanks to the fact that I put myself between them and as much as I hated to I had to kick the other dog away because the owner was just watching and laughing.
This is a bit of a vent post as much as a need for advice. I put reactiveness in between " " because I'm very new to this and I'm not sure if it can be considered reactiveness or not, but I think it is.
So here's the thing, after this happened my dog has become extremely scared of other dogs, which I think is normal according to what happened. But sometimes it feels like he wants to approach other dogs, even trying to pull me towards them. I let him approach sometimes, especially to dogs of the neighbourhood I know are calm and friendly, but the moment he's close he panics and begins trying to run away, circling around on the leash. When I take him away after these encounters he's always biting the leash and jumping on me, which he only does after meeting a dog.
I feel very lost, I don't know what I should do, should I let him approach little by little? Should I avoid all dogs at all? Walks are a nightmare because the moment he passes by another dog he begins with this behaviour I don't fully know how to manage. Please, I need some advice on how to handle this.
