first puppy hiccup – what would you do?

Hello, we (me + my partner, tween daughter) had been discussing getting a pomeranian for about two years. We had looked at a few prospective dogs. About a week ago we finally found the one. She is 3 months old. She picked us, we felt, crawled into my daughter's lap by choice and immediately relaxed. Appeared calm and happy. Her living environment was clean and welcoming. The breeder came recommended by someone we trust. We were set to pick her up next week and put down a small deposit. We chose a name and booked a vet appointment. I had a call from the breeder last night in tears – the puppy jumped from a sofa and broke her leg. She will have weeks in a cast and follow up x-rays. Breeder immediately offered to refund our deposit, kindly. The problem is that we really want this particular dog. I have read that puppies have a good chance of full recovery. As new dog owners – should we try to negotiate to get her anyway? It sounds like the breeder would prefer to refund us or let us choose another from the litter (my daughter is not interested, though this all happened just yesterday). I know 3 months is about the end of the time period that you want to take in a young puppy so she is not too traumatized by leaving her family/first home and how important 12-16 weeks is for socialization and teaching the rules of the new home.

I have visions of negotiating with the breeder – could we visit each weekend until she's ready? Should we take on the recovery ourselves with some sort of condition? Move on and try to find another?

I would appreciate any thoughts from more experienced dog owners.
