My 7 y/o German Shepherd has always been a bit of an oddball. When he was a puppy, he was a super picky eater and he really only wanted to graze. Scheduled meal times almost always resulted in him only eating half of what he was given. A month or so before he turned a year old, I put his food bowl down on the ground and he ignored it like usual. But then he picked up this pink spiny ball, squeezed it in his mouth a couple of times, dropped it, and then circled his bowl a few times before laying down in front of it and eating his whole meal. This was probably one of the first, if not the very first time he ate an entire scheduled meal. However, he’s a BIG boy. To give you reference, he’s 160 pounds now and his vet says he is not overweight for his size. With his size and breed comes the worry of his stomach flipping. Through research online I’ve found that it is not recommended to have an elevated food bowl or to let your dog lay down to eat when they are a deep chested breed. So despite my celebrations that he was finally eating his full meal, I would always try to get him to eat standing up. But as soon as I would get him to stand up, he was uninterested all over again. Eventually, it turned into a new problem. He completely refused to eat his dog food without squeezing that pink spiny ball, circling his food a couple of times, and then laying down to eat. Eventually, I gave up and just made sure that he ate slowly and throughly and that he wasn’t exercising before or after the meal. 6 years later and he still refuses to eat without performing this ritual. Additionally, it has turned into exactly three squeezes of the ball, and three circles around his bowl. Sometimes he lays down an inch or so farther away from the bowl than usual and he has to redo it all. I’m mainly curious as to if anyone’s else’s dog has a quirk like this or if anyone has any sort of explanation for it. Is it dog OCD? It hasn’t really affected him in any other way. It also doesn’t really cause either me or him any problems. He doesn’t seem to be stressed out about it and we always make sure we have plenty of pink spiny balls on hand, but I do find it oddly specific and strange.
