Crate training advice 8 week old micro bernedoodle

We just picked up from a breeder our 8wk micro bernedoodle who was kept in a pen with a large crate at one end and pee pads in the other. He was with his mom & siblings. The breeder said the dogs are allowed to roam and she leaves the crate open day & night & they go pee on the pad. Issue is, although I know it’s early & only been one day, he screams and cries NON STOP in the pen & crate we set up. I tried to make it similar to where he came from but the crate needs to be closed eventually, right? Especially at night. He won’t eat in his pen without us next to him. He freaks out and cries. I try to sit next to him and he goes in & out of the crate with toys. But refuses to sleep. I put his carrier in my room night one next to me. I figured it’s smaller & he’s less likely to pee in there. He already peed in the downstairs larger 24” crate. He cried & yelped on and off all night. Ended up peeing in there & vomitted. We are also trying to potty train to go in the backyard. I’m not into him going potty on pee pads the whole time. The breeder said I have to that’s what he’s used to?? Any advice? Leave the crate open and just hope he naps a little? But he cries even in the pen alone. She said in my room to leave it open so he can go on pee pad at night. He can’t roam around my bedroom! 😩
