I live in southern Ontario in the Niagara region. We live on a rural property with a ravine on one side and forest in the back where the escarpment is. Our 1 acre backyard is fenced, 5ft high. Recently I’ve seen coyotes walk by in front of our driveway, one crossed through our front lawn and we have 2 dogs: A Samoyed and Aussie Sheppard. The Samoyed spends most of her time outside in the backyard but a few days ago a coyote was on the other side of the fence running back and forth with our Samoyed. It was a big one too! Obviously I’m scared to now let my dog out without a leash. Do coyotes jump fences? Or would they in this instance? There’s plenty of wildlife around here. I feel bad for not letting my dogs have full rein out there. I also don’t want anything happening to them! Any tips and advice on how to deter them would be appreciated! After that incident my husband cut the tall grass out behind our fenced area and he saw the coyote come out and stare. It eventually went away.
