Could you give me the 411 on brushing my dog’s teeth?

I have a Golden Retriever dog named Lee. He will be four years old in January.

I've never brushed my dog's teeth before, and I would like to start doing that. Could you give me the 411 on this? Any toothbrush or toothpaste? Is once or twice a week enough?
