Bathroom Habits

To sum it up, potty training our dog has been… difficult. He is 13 months now and we got him at 6 months. He pees outside no problem now. But he still doesn’t give us a warning when he needs to go like our other dog. So if it’s been longer than 3 hours there’s a high chance he’ll just go inside. Again, no warning. No issue here, just means we need to take him out more often, which we do.

It’s his pooping that’s a problem. Most times we take him out he will NOT poop outside. But instead, will do it immediately after coming back in. He doesn’t ever poop in his crate, so what we’ve done to combat this issue is put him up for 20-30 minutes then try taking him out again. Usually he’ll poop after this.

But we’re still having accidents inside. For example, some nights he’s really good at holding both potties in all night, other nights not so much. Just now, and what’s causing me to write this post, he had a poo accident. My fiancé took him out an hour and a half ago before he went to work. Meaning, he’s probably been in the crate for an hour max while I was finishing up my shift. I come home from my shift and let both my dogs out their crates. All is well for 10 minutes but then guess what, he poos. I feel at his age he should be able to hold it more than an hour-hour and a half, correct?

He just had a vet check up and they said everything looked perfect. So, doesn’t seem to be a physical problem. Unless this would be something they need to investigate deeper on rather than just looking at a stool sample. I’m unsure how that works, truthfully. Only thing I can think of is it’s for attention, maybe? He did this while I was petting our other dog and he tends to have jealousy issues. So, could he be pooping inside for attention? Or is it simply just his age? I’m getting at my wits end with this. I love my little guy to bits and pieces. But, I don’t want to come home from an 8 hour shift and have to clean up dog poo immediately.

I know you guys can’t diagnose my dog over a Reddit thread. But any advice is welcomed and appreciated. Thank you.
