Forgive me, this will be a bit long, but I really am trying to be mindful about finding a pup that would be happy in our home. Not in a rush at all so if it takes a while to find the right dog, that’s OK. I wfh with 2 cats, have an enclosed backyard and a doggy door. My cats basically ignore me so I’d love a cuddly little love bug.
There are quite a few Chihuahuas in my local shelters/rescues, and I’m finding myself more and more interested in adopting one. Males far outnumber the females around here, anyone know why that might be?
I’m hoping folks can advise me on what to look for mostly during my visits with potential pups, especially around aggression issues.
I know that in a shelter environment there’s only so much you can learn about a dog’s triggers and temperament. A lot of the rescues bring their dogs to the pet stores for adoption events and I don’t like the idea of trying to get to know a dog in such a crowded busy place. I’d rather go to the rescue or meet the foster at home and also the dog park if they were willing. I want to spend some one on one time and observe behavior and stimuli response. I’m open to adopting different small breeds too, but there are so many chi’s around here, and I do love some of their adorable quirks!
I know it’s very common for chi’s to have dental and knee problems, issues with nail clipping, excessive barking, guarding, etc, so I think I know what I’m getting into with some of the common health and behavior issues. Of course, there are going to be unexpected variables, but I’d like to do my best find a ‘fairly’ calm (lol), healthy adult around 4-7 years old. Possibly a little more senior. As much as I wish I could, I know I’m not a good fit for an elderly dog with a lot of health issues.
Hit me with your advice.
