Advice needed about a recent adoption

My partner and I found a dog in our parking lot a few weeks ago and managed to catch him. He stayed at the shelter for a week and since we had been talking about a second dog we thought we’d give him a try. It’s risky I know and I shouldn’t have taken the shelters word when they said he seemed interested in other dogs. Now he’s not outwardly aggressive or anything but when our current dog tries to play the new dog snaps. They can around each other and go on walks together fine but if our current dog tries to initiate play then new dog is not fine. We’ve had new dog for two weeks and have kept them pretty separated with new dog in a crate (he needed to be crate rested anyways after getting neutered and coming home sick) and old dog still gets free reign during the day. Twice now we have tried to let them play and interact and both times haven’t gone well. No one has been hurt but I don’t want it to get to that point. New dog is incredibly sweet and playful with people but just isn’t interested in other dogs at all and I can’t see this working out with that being the case as current dog is very playful and high energy. I’m asking for advice but I think I know he is unfortunately not suited for a household with another dog.
