So last week I adopted an 7 week old puppy mixed breed. 3 days ago his crate came in. I would like for the dog not to have seperation anxiety which is why it is important for me that he be crate trained, and since he can't go outside yet as the previous owners didn't bother doing an vaccine shots or anything vet related, he just got his shots, and as I live in a quite crowded place my vet recommended he doesn't leave the house for 2 weeks after the shot, I have to potty train him inside the house on pads which the crate would also help with.
His first time seeing the crate he wasn't scared at all the second I threw a treat in the back he just hopped straight in with no hesitation. He sits in there when I ask, lays down and everything. He doesn't go in to nap himself which I would like him to do, every time he falls asleep I pick him up and put him in, but he just leaves straight away.
I worked on crate door desensitization, by closing the door for a second and then opening it before he had a chance to whine and cry. But when I finally decided to close the crate for even a minute the whining and crying are very intense, I wait for him to calm down and take him out throw in a kong and lock him in again. While the kong is going he is calm but the second it's done it is back to crying. There is so much information on what to do in these situations – let him cry it out, don't let him cry it out, any tips and information would be much appreciated on what to do in this situation
