We have an 8 month old male husky mix and a 6 year old female red heeler/staff rescue. I’ve had the older one since she was 10 weeks old and knew how horrible the teenage phase can be but omg, male hormones + husky feels worse.
We just went on a week-long trip and had the dogs looked after by friends separately. I was looking at boarding the puppy but my friend wanted to have him to convince her partner to get a second dog (newsflash, I don’t think they’ll ever get a second dog now).
- He killed one of her pet quails. They’re pretty dumb birds and stick their heads out of the cage so he bit one off 😐 she had tried to barricade the quail area but he just jumped over the gate to get to them
- Days after the quail murder he knocked over a brick wall, it literally looks like he took a sledgehammer to it. This wall was on the side of the quail enclosure and his prey drive had him doing demolition
- Destroyed one of her miniature hobby house models, which was shelved reasonably high up
- Destroyed multiple pairs of shoes, broke plant pots, miscellaneous items all chewed up
- Chewed up and de-stuffed her previous deceased dog’s bed which she had a connection to and was keeping
My friend has an older rescue blue heeler who is bounds of energy, so I think she underestimated him and the pursuits of a teenage puppy and left a lot of things within reach. She had left the house with him having access to the internal of the house where all her stuff is, whereas at home he gets crated if we leave the house for 30 mins, and everything is out of reach as best as we can.
He’s proved he can’t be trusted and that we need to up the ante on his training, remain consistent, enrichment enrichment enrichment.
We’re compensating my friend with money, as well as a new hobby house and I’m in the process of arranging two new quail chicks for her.
