12 week old biter – crate use

Tibetan Terrier male has settled in great over last month; loves his crate, doesn’t mind enforced naps. Very intelligent and blowing me away with obedience training. House training is getting there…

But of course he’s a shark. Ignoring, redirecting etc is nonsense, he doesn’t care and will keep biting even straight after a nap. He’s super focused when food is involved, plays nicely sometimes but often goes into attack mode especially with my gf.

My question; I want to use his crate to remove his access to us when he wants to bite, but therein runs the risk of negative association if it’s used as a negative punishment. Has anyone had success in using crates for timeout to curb biting, or will I undo all the great progress we’ve made with the crate? He’s kept in the living room by baby gate, but no pen or other space to confine him available.
