  • 15 week old puppy will not stay settled in crate

As the title says, my 15 week old min pin puppy won't stay settled in the crate during the day.

I brought her home a week and a half ago, and she was great, would sleep in there for up to 2 hours, I could leave the room for short amounts of time. The last few days she will not sleep in there during the day.

She'll happily go in for a play, on her own, or let me put her in when she's sleepy. She'll curl up, but within 10-15 minutes of me closing the door she'll perk up, cry, bite and claw at the bars and refuse to settle.

At this point I've given up, I'm letting her sleep next to me or on me so she gets her naps in, but that's not sustainable. any tips or ideas would be really appreciated!

  • Crated puppy separation anxiety

Hey all thanks in advanced for the help and I’m glad to have already picked through this group for some great info here.

My question involves a puppy we just got a week ago. She’s an 8week old Aussiedoodle. I know they’re high energy and I know she’s a puppy and I know she needs to get used to our life and how we function and fit into our schedules.

My issue involves crate training and what I can do to ease what I believe is just puppy separation anxiety. No she’s not ripping apart at the cage and freaking out, but after a few hours she decides she needs to bark and yelp in hopes of getting somebody’s attention. (Yes I know a few hours is long for this age but she’s honestly already such a good girl)

I work nights 3 days a week as a nurse and my wife works during the day as a school nurse. Currently about to finish my first shift since we got the puppy and I plan to run her tired after I get home before I try to sleep. My wife can come home on her break to let the dog out and run her tired before going back on the days I sleep, and then after work she’ll be home. It will eventually work out well, but I need some ways to help reduce the puppy anxiety. I got some puzzle toys coming from Amazon, and she sleeps with our t-shirts in her bed in the crate for the scent. Currently she has a Kong toy with treats and some bone toys. She does have a pee pad she uses at least twice without issue

We’re in NJ and once winter is over and I can walk/ hike her 3 times a day we shouldn’t have any issues.

Tl;dr- I’m looking for ways to help my puppy get used to the crate better and help her cope better for longer time frames.

  • 10 Month Old dog issues.

    After some advice/Maybe just venting!

Last year we got a Cockalier (Cockaspaniel/Cavalier mix). We tried to do everything as best we could, reading up on how to get the foundations right, taking her to puppy and adolescent dog classes as well as breed specific training sessions.

In a lot of ways she's been brilliant, she took to toilet training straight away and we never had issues apart from the usual puppy accidents in the first few weeks and she's never been disctructive.

She's very obedient, knowing loads of commands now and she's sweet a lot of the time however there are a few issues of concern.

She's quite reactive to sound currently, if she hears something outside or elsewhere on the house she barks a lot at it. She does a lot of attention barking if we are sitting up to eat or cooking. She has also shown signs of resource guarding against other dogs when they visit the house so we are managing that.

Most concerning is she has started to growl in the evenings when she's approached in her bed or the sofa or if she thinks we are going to pick her up. Not very aggressive growling with teeth etc. but a quite low level grumble.

She's crate trained and if we ask her to go into her crate she's right in there with no issue, but I'm worried that she seems to have started getting a bit grumpy in the evenings and it's at risk of escalating which in turn make us anxious.

  • Having trouble with our sleeping arrangement

I have a golden retriever/husky mix that's about a year and 3 months. She's been really into sleeping in our bed with us since about August of last year. I have no issues with this and for me, owning a dog involves co sleeping with one. However- this little beast takes up a disproportionate amount of room despite her size. It's me and her + my husband. She has really begun to irritate my husband and impacting his sleep and honestly….same. I often wake up trapped between them and super uncomfortable. What are some of the solutions you have thought of in your experience? I would love to continue having her in our bed but the impact on sleep can be a lot sometimes. She can have her own bed but she'll just end up in ours regardless. What works?

  • How to tell if my mutt has a double coat?

Hi so I have an australian cattle dog mix— I know that ACD’s are usually double coated but my girl is a mutt. How am I supposed to tell if she has one? She really loves the cold and snow- and rarely ever gets cold even in temps of 20 degrees or less. I want to know how to tell so I can stop worrying about her being cold 😭

  • Did I mess up?

I had my cats at my partner’s place for a few days because of a winter storm in my area, and I was worried about losing power in my area. He lives with a roommate who has a Shiba, and we knew to keep her away from the cats because of their high prey drive. She actually got into his room once and chased the cats and it was really scary and stressful. They remained in the bedroom the entire time.

When I had to leave and head back home, I had packed all of my bags in the bedroom and needed to keep the bedroom door open to move everything quickly. I was alone in the house and decided to put the Shiba in the spare bathroom for like 3 minutes max. She freaked out and started frantically scratching the door. I immediately opened it after a few minutes, and I heard from his roommate that she scratched up the paint on the door. I apologized and offered to fix up the paint on the door. He didn’t respond to my apology. Is it harmful to keep a dog in the bathroom like that for a few minutes ? I’ve only had cats in the past.

  • Help! Just adopted a dog as a new dog owner and need advice.

So my wife and I just adopted a 1 year old shepherd/lab mix from Azerbaijan and picked her up from the airport last night. She’s a very sweet girl, but to be perfectly honest, we are overwhelmed trying to figure out how to care for her. We walk her 3 times a day, even in the cold weather in the northeast, but she never goes to the bathroom outside the house. The foster in Azerbaijan told us she did indeed go to the bathroom during walks, but that she occasionally would have accidents in the house. We put wee-wee pads wherever she peed in our apartment but we are honestly in over our heads. How do we get her on a regular schedule for eating and walking, and get her peeing/pooping during her walks? We both work full time (me 9 am – 6 p),so any advice would be greatly appreciated

  • What do you think the human equivalent is to stepping on your dog’s tail?

I can’t get over the yelp she yelped when I accidentally stepped on her tail today. My poor girl.

But I’m curious if it actually hurts or if it’s more startling?

  • Help with pee pads and elderly dog

Hello everyone, i have a 13 year old small mix who will absolutely NOT use puppy pads. Cloth or disposable. Ive tried high reward training.

He cant be completely confined because he will start howling (LOUD) and crying and ripping up flooring, and self injuring. its only when i try to coop him up in any way and its been this way for 10 years.

I have not been able to get him to use a pad one single time the entire 10 years ive had him. I have tried.

Crate training was like i was actually torturing him.

Diapers wont work because he is very oblong and he slides them off after making his back end go completely limp like he’s paralyzed.

He is now dealing with consistent accidents of 1-2 times a day in the same spot, sometimes other spots. I have tried covering the spot but he pees around, or physically moves the barrier.

I have carpets, i live in a rental, wtf am i supposed to do.
