  • Help with fussy puppy & sensitive tummy

English Springer Spaniel, 20.4KG, Female InTact, 7.8months, Ideal body shape, 2 walks a day + plenty of play & enrichment.

Ever since a puppy, she has been fussy. A lot of food we had to scatter feed to get her interest eventually complete disinterest and had to try new food. She has a very sensitive digestive system and most of her meals have caused loose stools so also another reason to change. When we find one that fixes this issue, she eventually hates the tastes and refuses to eat within 1-2 weeks. Then we have tried some wet food with it, which convinces her for a bit but not for long. It’s getting hard to find good food for her as she looses interest or it causes loose stools.

What we have tried in total:

Tesco puppy with chicken & veg kibble ,(Loose Stools) ASDA Hero with chicken kibble, AVA puppy dry dog food, ProPlan sensitive digestion medium puppy dry dog food lamb (when we had just the kibble, it would best for her gut. Firm stools but she hated the taste so we added the wet) + Forthglade Wet Puppy Food Variety Pack Grain Free & Hypoallergenic Dog food (loose stools & hates pattè texture now), Harringtons puppy rich in turkey + butchers grain free perfect puppy wet food, (tried some protexin veterinary pro-fibre dog pellets – did not help with loose stools and actually made them worse), Carnilove True Fresh Turkey Puppy Dog Food, Carnilove Puppy (Salmon & Turkey), CobbyDog Duck & Sweet Potato (grain free) all these 3, very solid stools. But lost interest in taste after a week and will only SOMETIMES tolerate if I scatter feed

  • At what age did recall click with your puppy?

Hey Redditors. My question is pretty simple – at what age did you feel like your recall training really clicked in your puppy's head, and they finally started getting it?

Our pup is nearly 1 – I do recall with him in the house and he is great at it, comes straight away everytime. As soon as we're out of the house though, I do not exist. I've tried a couple of ways just to see if anything worked better than others – so I've tried putting him on a long lead and giving him a little tug if he doesn't come, but he still just ignores that. I've tried doing it off lead in a secure park, just to see if that worked any better, but of course that was worse. I'm using treats for our training as I do in the house, so not sure why it's just not working.

We've worked on this pretty much every day since I got him, and I'm just starting to get a bit disheartened, so any advice would be much appreciated. TIA.

  • Puppy coming soon – unsure of a few things!

Just to say I’ve had dogs my whole life, but my parents did the puppy stages, and when I’ve had dogs as an adult, we have rescued and they weren’t puppies.

We are getting a puppy at the end of November, and I’m just thinking ahead to the first few weeks. I have a toddler who I am a stay at home mum to, but we go to various groups and classes during the week. They usually last about an hour/hour and a half and are local to us so that would be the longest we would be out.

We are planning to crate train but I wasn’t sure about leaving her for an hour to an hour and a half the first wee while she’s here? Do I build up to leaving her that long? Or have my mum come and check on her half way through?

Other question is where she should sleep – we will have a crate downstairs so she has a space to go to away from toddler but I co-sleep with toddler and my husband sleeps in our room and we swap at weekends so everyone gets some sleep. I don’t particularly want the puppy waking the toddler and vice versa, so maybe she should be in our bedroom and that person be responsible for taking her out if she needs etc?

Thanks! I’m maybe overthinking but that’s what I do 🙂

  • Any chance any of you guys have raised a Canadian Eskimo Dog puppy before?

Some people in my community run a sledding business (basically you pay $30 and we take you sledding in a big circle through the woods). I have had the honor of the occasional shifts just as the occasional helping hand. I was looking for a dog and told them. One of their dogs recently had puppies and they've offered me one. 1/2 Canadian Eskimo Dog, 1/4 Siberian Husky, and 1/4 Alaskan Malamute. I have a lot of experience with dogs but everyone here always talks about how this dog is rare, special, and difficult. I think in an "I trust you" way but it's made me paranoid. I am trying to do a deep dive to prepare myself and be as perfect as possible. There is not a lot of detailed advice on how to raise something so "special" and what I do find is conflicting information surrounding care and training. Has anyone had a mix like this? My co-workers call them "Qimmiq" but my research even seems confused on what to call them or if my dog would be a "nonstandard qimmiq" or just a mutt. Others just say Inuit Husky. It's kind of sending me in a web of directions that don't lead as many places as I'd like.

If anyone here has gotten to raise a breed like this, or a mutt like this, or something similar… I'm all ears. I'm overthinking and desire any knowledge you've found to help me make the happiest and healthiest dog. And what behaviors do I need to be on top of immediately besides making sure they have a job?

Also, I apologize for the slur, that's the name of the dog I am being given and idk if people would recognize all the other names.
