  • Ο σκύλος μου δεν κάνει τίποτα από όταν φεύγει ο σύντροφος μου από το σπίτι

    Εχω ένα θηλυκό Γιόρκσαϊρ εδώ και 3 χρόνια την οποία την είχα εγώ με την οικογένεια μου από όταν συγκατοίκησα με τον σύντροφο μου και την πήρα μαζί μου δεν τρώει ( ισωσ Κάνα σνακ) δεν πίνει νερό και δεν πηγαίνει τουαλέτα μέσα στο σπίτι εκτός αν είμαστε βόλτα ή τη παροτρύνω εγώ, όταν λείπει ο σύντροφος μου και είμαστε οι δυο μας. Οταν έρχεται κάποιος επίσκεψη θα φάει λίγο και γενικά θα έχει διάθεση. Δε ξέρω γιατί συμβαίνει αυτό γιατί εγώ τη φροντίζω τη μεγάλωσα κτλπ επίσης να προσθέσω πως είμαι σε εγκυμοσύνη οπότε δε ξέρω αν μετράει αυτό καθόλου. Εχει βιώσει κανείς το ίδιο;

  • Questioning whether a harness is actually better than collar for flat-faced breeds like pugs and frenchies – what’s your experience?

Hello, fellow dog lovers. Over a year ago, I welcomed my first pug into my life (and my first dog ever), and I’ve always used a harness after seeing overwhelming info here and elsewhere recommending it over a collar given the pug’s anatomy, delicate throat, ect. Makes total sense to me, so I've never considered moving away from a harness nor have I seen any reason to second guess the claims that harness > collar for pugs…

As such, I was intrigued to read in The Pug Handbook that author, Brenda Belmonte, considers it a “mistaken belief” that Pugs are too sensitive in the throat area to walk with a collar. Instead, she actually recommends collars because they are a better way to communicate with your pug on walks. Here’s the quote from the book:

    • “A large number of Pugs are often seen walking their owners. Many of these Pugs share a common accessory— they are all seen wearing a harness. A traditional harness is an excellent alternative to a collar for any Pug that has a medical problem involving the neck, spine, or throat, but should not be substituted for a collar. There is a mistaken belief among Pug owners that the Pug is too sensitive in the neck and throat area to be safely walked with a collar and leash…Unless it is a no-pull harness your Pug will be able to pull you effortlessly during a walk, while leaving you with no real way to say, ‘Hello, remember me back here?’ Collars are better tools than traditional harnesses to give you a way to communicate with your pug.”

While I’m in no rush to move away from a harness and also question if the juice is even worth the squeeze (my pug tends to pull on walks but not a major issue), I’m curious if there are any pug owners or similar flat-faced breed owners here that can add more color or nuance to this take above.

Those with experience using both collars and harnesses for pugs/similar breeds, have you noticed any, if at all, meaningful differences in how you communicate with your dog on walks, or observed changes in their breathing?

Also, a “no-pull harness” is new to me. It sounds like it might offer a nice middle ground between a collar and a traditional harness, but I’m curious about its security and whether it’s any easier for a pug to slip out of.

  • I’m going to cry – my puppy won’t potty outside

I’ve sat beside him all evening and waited for him to assume the position to immediately scoop him up and take him out. It happened and i brought him out but it’s pouring rain and he won’t go. I brought him back in and he immediately tries to potty so I bring him out again and we stand in the pouring rain for 45 min and he won’t go!! I bring him in and he immediately tries to potty and now we are back in the rain and he won’t go. Idk what to do we are drenched and I’m exhausted and sick, and it’s supposed to rain the next 8 of 10 days 😭

  • My puppy won’t stop peeing everywhere. Help 🙁

I’m a first time dog owner so I’m really just coming here for some advice. I’m sure potty accidents are completely normal, but it seems very excessive with my pup. It’s been this way since we adopted her which was about two months ago. I let her out constantly all day to the point where it drives me crazy I’m practically opening my back door every 10-20 minutes just to get her to go outside and at least try to go potty. Sometimes she does, sometimes she doesn’t. She’s smart and knows the command “go potty” because when she has to she’ll go, even if it’s just a little bit and then she’ll come back inside. Problem is, sometimes I’ll let her out, she doesn’t go, then comes inside and goes potty within 5-10 minutes after coming back in which is a little frustrating. Not to mention her favorite place to go is my toddlers bedroom. Poop/pee she’ll do both. She’s peeing in the house a few times a day at this point which to me seems like quite a lot even though I’m letting her out constantly. And I mean CONSTANTLY. What’s odd is I’ve actually had days where we’ve had no accidents at all, but days like those are rare. I’m in a little over my head over here it feels like 🥲 but maybe that’s because I’m potty training my two year old right now as well so it just feels like all I do 24/7 is deal with pee! lol. I’m tired of cleaning up pee multiple times a day in the living room and my kids room. She goes on our carpet which is extremely difficult to thoroughly clean… I feel like I smell pee practically everywhere at this point and it makes my house feel dirty/unsanitary for my children, and just overall pretty gross. I’m not sure what to do…When I adopted her the previous owner made it seem like they had none of these issues with her. I’m feeling a little bit overwhelmed as this has now been going on quite a while and pretty consistently. I would also like to add that she is somewhat crate trained and spends time in there during the day and sleeps in there at night and she usually doesn’t have accidents in there. She sleeps in her crate all through the night no issues what so ever. But when she’s in there during the day usually for a nap, or if im running errands, she’ll yelp and cry. When she starts to whine I usually assume maybe she has to go potty, so I’ll let her out, take her outside, and bring her back in and put her back in her crate. But when I let her out to freely roam my house that’s when these issues happen. I love animals to death and she’s a VERY sweet dog but I find myself starting to resent her a bit with all of these accidents and I don’t want to feel that way, I feel guilty for feeling that way. I’d also like to add we’ve ruled out that she doesn’t have any bladder issues/UTI Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you

  • Fractured Tibia and Fibula

    Backstory:

On Saturday, my 10-month-old mini Goldendoodle had a grooming appointment at Petco. We've been there many times without any issues, but this time, her regular groomer wasn't available. When I picked her up, I didn't notice anything wrong until Sunday, when I saw her right eye was red. I thought it might just be irritated from the shampoo and decided to wait 48 hours to see if it improved before taking her to the vet. Although her eye color slightly improved, I still decided to take her in to be safe. When we arrived at Petco, she was scared to even go inside. I picked her up and walked toward Vetco, but moments later, she jumped out of my arms and fractured her fibula and tibia. To make matters worse, apparently my fur baby also had a cut on her eye from the grooming appointment. The attending veterinarian gave her a pain relief shot, put her in a splint, and prescribed oral pain medication and eye drops. I tried calling to schedule her orthopedic consultation but was told there was no one available, and I need to call back tomorrow.

Question: We’ve been home for a 6 hours now and I’m struggling to get her to potty using a towel as a sling.. how can I help her potty?

  • Obedience training recs?

I have a 5 month old cattle dog/lab mix, and while he's actually not that hard to manage overall, he can be fairly disobedient sometimes (especially if there's no incentive of treats to get him to listen).

I have a discount on a Petco obedience training program, but before I commit to that, I wanted to hear from others. Are the standard training programs at most Petco/PetSmart locations good enough? Or should I seek out more private training??

  • How do single dog mums manage working full time in the office?

    Hey everyone,

Apologies if this isn’t the right place to post but I’m looking for some advice or reassurance.

I’m about to start a new job and it’s quite a big change. In my current role I work fully remote. I have a dog, go to the gym regularly, study, and have my home routine down to a T. With this new job I’ll be office based.

I’ve already arranged for a dog walker twice a week and my mum has offered to pick my dog up after her work (she finishes around 2 pm) and take her to her house for the afternoon.

Still, I can’t help feeling a bit overwhelmed by the change and guilty about leaving my dog alone during the day. Realistically she’s pretty independent and will probably be fine but I’m still struggling with the guilt.

So yeah, how do all the single dog mums juggle it all work, walks, the gym, socialising, and everything else life throws at us?
