  • 14-week-old puppy suddenly waking up more at night — help!

    Hey everyone,

My 14-week-old mini poodle had been sleeping through the night (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.) for a couple of weeks, but for the past few days he’s started waking up a lot more.

Last night he woke up at 1:30 a.m. to pee and poop, then again at 3:30 a.m. for a small pee, and we voluntarily took him out again at 6 a.m., where he pooped AGAIN!!!!!!!

His last potty break is at 11 p.m., and he eats dinner around 630-7 p.m. (poops within 5 minutes after). His water bowl is picked up around 8–8:30 p.m.

He used to sleep right through the night without needing to go out, so I’m not sure what changed. His stool has been pretty normal, maybe slightly soft lately but nothing alarming.

Could this be a mini regression? A growth phase? Habit? Dinner too late? I’m trying to figure out if I should just wait it out or tweak his schedule somehow. There is one other possibility and it's a big one so we'll see: We gave him the no-poo chews for a few days but was causing him to get really loose stools so we stopped and it was impossible to get the poop away from him (today would be the first day without them).

Would love to hear if anyone else’s pup went through this at around 13–14 weeks and what helped!

  • Breed recommendation please

**Introduction** 1)Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs? * Not my first dog. We had a cocker/jack russell cross when I was young, and a king charles recently. 2)Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a [reputable breeder]( http://ownresponsibly.blogspot.com/2011/07/identifying-reputable-breeder.html)? * rescue but it's a slight preference 3)Describe your ideal dog. * small to medium size, shortish haired, able to go for long walks, happy to be fussed over by teenagers 4)What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why? * I don't know enough about different breeds to say 5)What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do? * Walk well on a lead, sit down, good recall off the lead 6) Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport? * no **Care Commitments** 7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day? * 1-2 hours a day personally, my kids will have their own time with the dog. 8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park? * 2-3 hours on average. 9)How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly? * I can brush every day. I don't want to do trimming and grooming at home. Willing to pay a professional, yes. **Personal Preferences** 10)What size dog are you looking for? * no bigger than a border collie, no smaller than a corgi 11) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle? * I don't mind a little shedding, it's a dog so there's going to be barking but not constant, slobber - no thanks 12) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area? * not important but maybe once or twice a year at a beach **Dog Personality and Behavior** 13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space? * tend towards snuggly 14) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please? * somewhere in the middle 15) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors? * I'd want them to bark if somebody entered my garden, and sit by the door if the doorbell rings/there's a knock at the door. I'd prefer them to at least not jump up on visitors. 16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs? * no 17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid? * chewing once they're not a puppy **Lifestyle** 18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone? * never, I work remotely 19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog? * they don't want a big dog. They will walk and feed the dog occasionally. 20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they? * 2 rescue cats. One comes in from time to time, the other prefers to stay outside. 21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly? * yes, teenagers 22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease? * I'm a homeowner 23) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds? * Northern Ireland. I need a dog licence and chip, and the banned breeds are broadly in line with England & Wales. 24) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live? * Summer 18/19 °C (64/66 °F), winter 7/8 °C (45/46 °F) **Additional Information and Questions** 25) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant. * No additional information. 26) Feel free to ask any questions below.

  • Question for dog owners: would you use something like this?

If you suddenly couldn’t come home (accident, emergency, etc) who would take care of your dog?

I have an idea and I’m not sure if it’s something only I see value in (single / living alone) or if there is more people in the dog community who think about this stuff…

I’m working on a simple tool where you can officially nominate a “pet guardian” or essentially who gets your dog if it outlives you. It asks a few questions, lets your chosen person accept, and then gives you a PDF declaration you can keep/share.

It’s not a legal thing, just a structured, official way to make sure someone is clearly nominated and informed.

Would you use this? Or do you already have a plan in place for your dog if something happened to you?

If you’d use it… what would you want it to include?

Really curious to hear how people think about this.

  • Puppy blues without the puppy?

    Hey!

For context, I’m 20 years old, I have a decently large house that I live alone in, and I work from home.

I decided to get a dog to be a companion as I do get very lonely living alone.

However, it’s been 3 days and the puppy blues have not stopped. He’s not even a puppy, he’s 2 years old, and he’s really well trained.

I just have this constant overwhelming feeling of sadness ever since I got him. I just wanted to see if anyone else has felt this?

  • How do you deal with your puppy crying in the crate?

We got a 11 week old puppy, she has been sleeping in her crate every night now, and naps in it during the day. (We are crate training until she is old enough to sleep in her own bed in our room) but the second night she was here, she screamed and howled for 3 hours straight. I tried to ignore it but I didn’t even know at which point to stop ignoring, neither of us could sleep. She’s on the same floor as us so it’s hard to not hear her, I was up even after she ended up going to sleep because it was giving me so much anxiety listening to her. We have gone through a hard year and getting her has been such a big help on me mentally, but ever since that night she was crying so bad, if she starts crying or whining even a little bit (it’s usually only like 30 minutes max and very subtle now) I get so much anxiety I’m up for hours and can’t sleep. I don’t know how to feel calm about it, she is really my baby, but I am struggling with sleep because of my own brain, it’s always triggered by her whining. How do you deal with this!? And ignoring? Any tips or advice. She had a snuggle puppy with a heart beat in it and one of my shirts for comfort. I just am really struggling and I feel so crazy like this isn’t normal for feeling so much anxiety at night time. Please tell me I am not alone in feeling this way, help!

  • Planning for a Cockapoo pup in 2 weeks

We are expecting to bring home a cockapoo puppy in two weeks. After watching a ton of videos and podcasts I'm thinking about the following to start off with :

size adjusting crate in the living room covered with blanket which is where we spend most of our time.

size adjusting crate covered with blanket in our bedroom

paper liners in the crate until we get potty training under control. was going to use washable pads but heard a horror story about puppies chewing them up.

hand towels on top of both crates (just expecting a fair number of potty training mistakes in the early going)

Snuggle Puppy with extra heat packs in crate only

toying with the idea of a heating pad on top of the crate under the blanket but that also might be overkill with the snuggle puppy + heat packs (although the heat packs could get expensive after a while)

36" square play pen with washable potty pad underneath

2 x puppy kong (what goes in the puppy kong? seems like most people are freezing a mixture of dog food kibble and peanut butter? when does the dog get it?)

Kasa pet cam (I've had enough issues with wyze that I'm ready to try something else)

The hang up is the potty training – my wife and I work full time and I have two sons, one who works part time and one who goes to school. I'm hoping I can convice the part time worker to help out after we leave and before he goes to work – that should leave us with only 3 hour unattended crate windows which is not ideal but should still work (I think) but hence the towels and disposable paper liners.

    What have I missed?

    Thanks in advance.

  • “That’s a big dog”

I have a 70 lb adolescent rescue dog. He’s close to full grown. The entire community and general public will not stop commenting how “BIG!” my dog is.

He is smaller than most goldens and labradors, who don’t receive this attention. I’m not taking him on an airplane, we’re just walking down the street. He comes up to just above my knee.

Why do people say this? Do they not know what to say? Are they uncomfortable with mixes that aren’t small? It seems like they are not happy about the dogs size.

  • What do you miss about life pre-puppy?

I feel like a lot of people can probably relate to missing aspects of life before a puppy and that doesn’t make you a bad owner, frankly I think it makes you a good one because you’re working so hard on your pup! I just wanted to share some things I miss and hear what others miss as well, it feels good to voice it and not feel guilty!

My puppy is 8months and I love her to death, she is great. But as I am sitting here in silence, playing my switch and drinking my coffee while she is napping in her crate… MAN I missed doing this! It’s currently so peaceful, my two cats are just chillin with me all snuggled up. This is what missed, doing this every morning.

We’ve recently started boarding our puppy on the occasional weekend to have time together just my fiance and I. It’s helped a ton but I do miss just being able to have couple time without constantly preventing my monster from chewing on EVERYTHING 😂😂 Also just going on spur of the moment vacations, boarding is expensive so a night here and there is okay but a full trip- I can’t imagine the cost!

Share away 🙂 this is a guilt free post!
