  • This is a sad GDV story

Vacation for 5 days, left our two dogs at a boarding facility. On fifth day received a phone call at 1111a saying one of our dogs was unwell with tight tummy and threw up phlegm once. They ask us to take her to the vet. Well she has a sensitive tummy if she eats the wrong things, I’m not sure of the severity, but the employee says they’re worried so we get there by 1145a.

Our dog is catatonic. Clearly in sh*ck. Her belly is fully bloated. The employee says this was the condition they found her in.

I know what’s happening but it hasn’t registered yet. The vet they recommended is closed for lunch, we take a brief walk around the property there’s do gs present without supervision in kennels up to 50yds from the facility.

We reach the vet and he says maybe it’s a UTI, I’m skeptical but he’s old and has been in business a while. Two hours later he calls and says it’s bloat and recommends another facility that can perform surgery asap. The quote was $14,800 and thats not feasible for us, so we proceed with euthanization.

The facility claims they knew when they found her at 1030a that it was bloat and they promptly called us and we declined taking her to the vet and had we acted sooner, she’s still be alive. The owner quoted my concern about vet costs, but to be clear I didn’t know my dog was in sh*ck, I didn’t know she had bloat. She stated if it was her she wouldn’t be worried about the money. Which is just a cold, tactless comment given the circumstances and the fact that she owns a boarding facility, but I digress.

My dog is 5 yr old healthy Dutch Shepard. Who gets plenty of exercise, food, and company. IMHO what likely happened is she was left unattended for an extended period of time and by the time they found her it was done. IMHO she was “d**d” before they even called. I’m posting to poll the community for their experience with Gdv.

Regardless, the lack of professionalism, compassion, and integrity makes me question how I delegate trust. One of the managers is the daughter of a former coworker and she sent some angry texts after I left a negative review. Let’s add insult to injury.

TLDR: sanity check, facility dropped the ball? Or…

  • New dog (not puppy) peeing and pooping in house a LOT

We just adopted a second husky, she is between 5 and 9 years old (the shelter vet said 9, the rescue said 5). Her foster family said that she never had any accidents in the house, but she had an open door so she could go outside whenever she wanted. Since bringing her home three days ago, she had only pooped outside once, all of her other poops have been inside. She will pee outside, then pee inside literally a few minutes after coming back inside. We've been taking her out every two hours, but that doesn't seem to matter. I know that it could be a medical problem, but our vet appointment isn't for two more days and we are going crazy.

I know when training a puppy, you're not supposed to say "no" when they pee in the house, but does that apply to an adult who is already house trained? What else can we be doing??

  • Varying nap times is messing up routine

I have a 10 week old pup, on day 12 currently. He is doing really well generally, but me and my partner are trying to get him into a 1 up 2 down routine, and the issue we are having is that he just wont sleep for the 2 hours in his crate. In the evening he is zonked so he will, but in the day he generally sleeps for 1-1.5 hours, and then will wake up and juat cry and bark until hes let out. We have tried leaving for 10minutes, then a quick potty trip, then back in, but he just starts up again. It means our schedule that we ve drawn up is getting pulled out of shape. Any ideas or thoughts?

  • Really scary situation at Home Depot today

I took my golden pup to Home Depot to pick out paint swatches (our location is very dog friendly with dog treats) and as we were walking a large man approached us and leaned down to talk to my dog, he told my dog " get close to me and I will (un alive) you!"

He proceeded to threaten to end my dog's life 3 times while we walked away. My dog just wagged his tail at him excited.

I am always respectful of peoples space and keep a 6' space using leash control. If someone wants to greet my dog I allow it since he loves to say hi to people, but I don't allow him to approach anyone.

I just left, but it was really scary to go through alone. I am 4 months pregnant so I just decided it is safest to walk away.

  • My 1-year-old puppy still isn’t potty trained and I’m losing my mind

Ok, I know there are a million posts about this, but just like the title says, my puppy, Magnolia Mayhem, will not potty train. She’s a year old now and I’m starting to feel like it’s never going to happen. It’s driving me insane. My older dog (she’s 12 now) was nothing like this, but I know every dog is different.

What’s killing me is how consistent I’ve been. Through rain, heat waves, sickness, holidays, every single day since I got her at 10 weeks, we’ve gone out at the same times. She has a walker midday and is perfect then with no accidents in her playpen. At night in her crate she’s also perfect, not a single mess.

But the second I get home from work If I’m not watching her literally 100 percent of the time, I’ll find pee or poop somewhere. I’ve tried tethering her to me (she was great that week), but as soon as she got a tiny bit of freedom, boom, I stepped in poop. Like, am I destined to have a puppy attached to my hip for the next 15 years?

We clean up every single time with enzyme spray and mop the whole house with enzyme cleaner every weekend just in case. There has been some progress, to be fair. She used to pee on the sofa or on any clothes on the floor, but thankfully that has stopped. I’ve even increased her evening potty breaks, but she still sneaks off sometimes.

She’s actually great about going outside and always does both when we go out. But if the baby gate gets left open or she’s playing with her sibling, chaos ensues.

She’s a 5-pound Yorkie mix, the sweetest little gremlin menace to society, but I’m honestly starting to wonder if she’ll ever fully get it.

  • Puppy eats everything on walks

I have an almost 6 month old female Corgi and she literally will try to eat everything when she is outside. Teaching the leave it command the usual way has worked before, but she just gets overwhelmed with everything outside im guessing and ignores me. Any tips on how to handle this would be great. I am enrolling her in some puppy classes soon so hopefully that helps.

  • 14-week-old puppy suddenly waking up more at night — help!

    Hey everyone,

My 14-week-old mini poodle had been sleeping through the night (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.) for a couple of weeks, but for the past few days he’s started waking up a lot more.

Last night he woke up at 1:30 a.m. to pee and poop, then again at 3:30 a.m. for a small pee, and we voluntarily took him out again at 6 a.m., where he pooped AGAIN!!!!!!!

His last potty break is at 11 p.m., and he eats dinner around 630-7 p.m. (poops within 5 minutes after). His water bowl is picked up around 8–8:30 p.m.

He used to sleep right through the night without needing to go out, so I’m not sure what changed. His stool has been pretty normal, maybe slightly soft lately but nothing alarming.

Could this be a mini regression? A growth phase? Habit? Dinner too late? I’m trying to figure out if I should just wait it out or tweak his schedule somehow. There is one other possibility and it's a big one so we'll see: We gave him the no-poo chews for a few days but was causing him to get really loose stools so we stopped and it was impossible to get the poop away from him (today would be the first day without them).

Would love to hear if anyone else’s pup went through this at around 13–14 weeks and what helped!
