  • Megathread: Pet Insurance

Which pet insurance is best for you? Are there any that may cover your dog's current treatment? Did your dog get injured during the waiting period and want to know if you're covered?

    Here's the place to ask.

Do know we cannot help you here with medical concerns, and lying or not disclosing things to the insurance company is illegal so we don't allow that either.

  • Is this pet insurance rate normal?

I signed my 10 week old Pit mix up for Trupanion last week and was quoted $135/month for a 90% coverage with $750 deductible and rehab cost coverage. This seems pretty high. Without the rehab coverage it was going to be $112. Is anyone else paying this high of a monthly rate with a $750 deductible with Trupanion? I went with Trupanion because my vet gave me a golden ticket for immediate coverage and a free 30 day trial but I also liked that you pay per condition and then the dog is covered unlimited for life.

  • Sudden change in behaviour. Puberty?

Hi everyone! Could you help me with some challenges I’m having with my little dachshund who just turned 1 year old?

Here’s the context: we got this female when she was 8 months old. Before that she lived on a farm with other dachshunds, but she withdrew a lot, so it was better for her to be placed with people.

Because she didn’t receive any training, it was difficult at first to raise her properly, but after a while things went really well! She’s house-trained, sleeps through the night on her own in the living room, and she’s very good at being alone.

Unfortunately, we’ve noticed that in the past few weeks she’s been showing different behavior. She suddenly starts barking at night; we’ve put her in the hallway and that helps, but we would really prefer to have her sleep in the living room. Letting her bark and ignoring it isn’t an option, because I live in an apartment building. I’ve also noticed that she starts barking when she’s home alone, and she gets extremely excited when I come home. I can clearly tell that she hasn’t been resting calmly in her bed. Other than that, she eats and drinks well, she’s active and enthusiastic, and she doesn’t seem to be in any pain.

Does anyone have any idea where this sudden change might be coming from and what I can do about it?

  • Puppy aggressive only in the AM when s/o kisses me goodbye?

So this is a strange one… we adopted a female red heeler mix – she’s about a year old and we’ve had her for 3 months. So far, she’s been super sweet with people, doesn’t bark or growl at anyone and the only behavior issues we’ve had are aggression towards other dogs. About a week ago, my bf went to leave for work and I was still in bed. He bent down to kiss me like he always does, and she barked and lunged at him. This was not in a playful way – her body language and pitch were different. We thought maybe she was just surprised and wrote it off, but it’s been happening every day since. Sometimes I leave before my bf and he’s still sleeping – she also lunged at me when I went to kiss him goodbye. This morning, he bent down to grab a book off the floor that was next to the bed and she almost bit him. So to recap:

It’s only been happening for the past week. We have no idea why it started.

It’s definitely aggressive which is new for her.

It’s only in the morning and only if we lean over the bed. (I’ve come home to my bf sleeping in the afternoon and she’s sleeping next to him wide awake, and lets me kiss him no problem. This was the same day she tried to bite me in the am for doing the same thing.

She’s very hyper in the morning. Ready to play, barks and nuzzles to get us up.

My best guess is she’s upset that we’re leaving. My bf was home all day with her for the first few months but recently went back to work. But the aggression isn’t ok and I don’t know for sure what’s triggering it or how to proceed. We do have a trainer we’re working with, but wanted other thoughts.

  • Relocating my 68-lb dog to Japan — looking for tips!

    Hi everyone!

I’m in the early stages of planning a move from Michigan to Japan, and I want to bring my 68-lb Lab mix with me. I know Japan has strict timelines and requirements, so I’m hoping to learn from others who’ve done this before. If you’ve relocated a dog to Japan (especially a larger breed), could you please share:

    • Which pet relocation or transport company you used
    • Whether your dog traveled as manifest cargo, checked cargo, or in-cabin
    • How long the preparation process took (vaccines, paperwork, approvals)
    • Any challenges, unexpected issues, or tips that made the process smoother
    • Approximate cost

Thank you so much in advance! Your experiences would be incredibly helpful.

  • Teeth chews?

Any recommendations on specific chews for bad breath? My dog doesn't like getting his teeth brushed. I always take him to get the deep clean but can't afford it this time around due to an unexpected expense.

  • Confused on vaccine timing

My puppy will be 16 weeks old Wednesday. He had his last parvo/lepto shots a week ago at 14.5 weeks old. He still needs his rabies shot.

I had originally scheduled him to get the rabies shot a week from today at 16.5 weeks mostly just to space out visits and shots. But in speaking with the vet this morning, they said he has to gave rabies before he can be around other dogs – which is a challenge since he starts his next training this weeknd (he already finished puppy class) and we want to start taking him places on his feet since he's nearly too big for his stroller.

So my question- the vet said if he gets his rabies shot this week, come this weekend he's basically good to go since he's 2 weeks past parvo/lepto and will have had his rabies shot.

Everything i am reading online says 28 days for full vaccination, but also dog to dog rabies transmission seems low. My vet is advising he'll be fine to socialize in 1-2 days after his rabies vaccine.

Am I overthinking it or is this advice concerning?
