  • Rugs that puppy won’t chew?

We just rescued a 6 month old golden retriever and she is chewing up our oriental rugs. We have no problem putting them up but unfortunately our 12 year old dog needs them for traction on the hardwood floors. Any ideas of a rug she won’t chew but still support our older guy?

  • Giving puppy ok to sleep outside of the crate

Our puppy turned 11 months old last week and he has slept in a crate from the day we brought him home at 7 weeks old. He has always been just fine in his crate but Tuesday morning he got me up at 3am and wanted out of his crate. Last night he just refused to settle in crate and took him outside to see if he has to potty in case he just didn’t go enough because it was cold. He just wanted on the couch. So I finally relented and let him just sleep on the couch. He did fine but my question is should we let him sleep where he wants if we don’t care as long as he is trustworthy. He was in the crate today when we both left the house and he didn’t have a problem with his crate then.

  • My dog likes licking toads

He's fine now, but it has become a recurring problem. I live in a rural area and this place is full of cane toads. For some reason, my dog just likes licking them.

I thought he would eat them or bite them but no, he just licks them really hard. Why would that be? Do bufotoxins have something that dogs like? Some other weird instinct? Thanks.

  • Help getting my dog to not be terrified of the cat

Hi everyone! My dog is very anxious, and we recently adopted a 3-month-old kitten who’s now trying to play with her. Unfortunately, my dog had some bad experiences with our previous cat, who was older when she arrived at our home and would hit her sometimes.

The new kitten is also quite nervous, but she’s slowly gaining confidence and trying to interact. The problem is that my dog runs away every time the kitten gets too close.

Their personalities are actually very similar, and we’re sure the kitten isn’t trying to hurt her, she just wants to play.

How can we help our dog feel safe enough to accept the kitten’s attempts to interact?

  • Turf grass for potty training?

Hi all, my hubby and I are adopting our first puppy this weekend. I have read to avoid puppy pads as to not associate rugs and the potty with indoors. I have seen the grass pads and was wondering if I could use my own turf mats I have. My dad gave me 3 or 4 of the large faux grass carpets and I was considering cutting them and making my own grass potty mat for just in case. It is also currently regularly below freezing where I live, and the ground is covered with a thick layer of snow pretty much everywhere. Was also wondering if this can cause confusion since the snow will be a different feel than grass will be- so would a grassy potty mat out back on our deck be beneficial to help puppy with texture association? He is 8 weeks and coming from a humane society.. mom was found with puppies at an abandoned house so I am pretty certain they have no other experience with potty training. Just looking for the best way to approach this! Thanks

  • Scared of strangers 9mo puppy

    Hi everyone!

I’ve had my puppy since she was 2mo old and now she’s 9mo old. I think I messed up during her first months of life by shielding her from the outside world because I was scared of her getting parvo. Now she’s scared of strangers! She’ll bark like crazy. Any tips on how to train reactivity to people?

She loves other dogs but it’s just people that she’ll bark at!

  • How is everyone doing with the cold?

Just pulled a poopsicle out of my puppies mouth so not the best over here 😭. It’s too cold to do our usual walks right now so we’re struggling until it warms up (relatively) on Friday.

  • Create training 8 month old puppy

We have been working on create training her since day 1. She was dumped multiple times before coming to us and has HUGE issues with being away from us. She can’t be out of a create cause she’ll tear everything up like most puppies tho lol. But we have tried everything from having her in there for short amounts of time, using her favorite toy, her favorite treats or treats she doesn’t get often. Nothing works for her and she just digs and cries the whole time she’s in there. She goes in just fine since we do her meals and we train going in and out. So she knows the command and sits there for us to close the door but once she’s in there for a few minutes or we’re out of view she just does everything to get out. We attempted to put her in our other dogs create since it’s more closed off and works with his anxiety but that was even worse. Her create is in the bedroom and tucked away, we’ve seen better results in this area but not enough for us to be okay with where she’s at.

  • dog doesnt bark

we adopted a dog from the shelter 3 weeks ago. she seems to be a 7 month old jackchi. weird thing is she doesnt bark. only one time she did bark at the fed ex guy but that was it. she does communicate with us by making grunting sounds and i acknowledge that sound as her way of talking .my husband says she sounds like shes hyperventilating but shes not thats the way she gets when shr wants to go out or she wants to eat for the 100th time. should i be concern about her not barking?
