  • Camping with 17 week puppy

Trying to plan camping trip with my Golden Retriever but haven’t camped with a puppy before.

How do you handle naps? We do 1-1.5 hours up and 2+ hours down.

He sleeps and naps in crate only.

We have a Four Wheel Camper truck bed camper and truck backseat can fit a large crate for him.

  • Getting a Second Dog

So I've been thinking about getting a second dog for a while now. My chihuahua/yorkie mix is 5 years old. She is my whole world, has severe separation anxiety (and just anxiety in general), and is an absolute velcro dog. She goes a lot of places with me and is obviously very used to being the only dog and the recipient of my affection.

Sometimes I think a puppy would be good for her, to have a little pal/companion. But then other times I'm worried that it will negatively affect her and maybe even change her personality. She's so sweet and loving, and I don't want that to change. I constantly go back and forth and I'm not sure what the right thing to do is.

  • Genius bully stick end hack!

My 2 dachshunds are SICK for bully sticks. I’ve kept a horde of the bully stick ends thinking that I would eventually figure out what to do with them, because these things are EXPENSIVE and I want to ensure I’m getting my moneys worth.

I saw a tik tok that if you put the bully stick end in the microwave for like 1-2 minutes, they puff up like the yak cheese sticks do. So I microwaved the bully stick end, and then as soon as I took it out of the microwave I threw it into a blender and it pulverized into a powder! Warning, this smells like absolute hell.

The next time I make them a batch of woof pupsicle treats I’m going to try and mix in the bully stick powder

  • Bag Recommendations

Looking for suggestions for a shoulder bag to carry my dog! Does not need to comply to plane compliance/standards.

I’m looking for a bag to carry my dog around NYC, when I take her on the subway or on train like LIRR/Amtrak. She’s a beagle mix, around 23 pounds, 22 inches long, and 20 inches tall.

Not looking for a backpack, I want to be able to see her. I currently have a pet carrier for the plane, but it is very hard to carry her, I put the shoulder straps on but still have to put both hands under the carrier to hold her. She also likes to have her head out.

Just to clarify, I would use this bag for train travel and in areas that are very crowded / loud, in which case she gets very nervous.

The few bags I’ve viewed from Reddit recommendations typically suggest the dog is max 20 lbs.

    Any recommendations?

  • Dogs & Stairs

Hi… I have owned seven dogs in my lifetime and the seventh dog will not go down the basement stairs. We have a nice, finished basement with a lot of room and all of our other dogs loved to hang out down there… But this one will not come down the stairs no matter how hard we try.

We have put food, treats and lunchmeat on every step…not interested. We have tried to coax with a gentle lead, reassuring voices, calm and quiet…no luck. He’s a rescue, a little over a year old, we’ve had him almost three months. He has adapted very well, has learned basic commands, is extremely affectionate and playful and behaves great. Loves to go outside in the backyard and will go down the patio steps without a problem or hesitation.

Just wondering if I’m missing a training technique or some magic way to get him to go down the stairs. He weighs about 65 pounds so carrying him is not an option. Thanks in advance.

  • Dog calming products

My 2.5YO golden is always anxiety – especially during walks and when meeting new people. He can control his excitement. I have tried training him and also offer high value treats during walks but he looks very hyper and over excited always. I was thinking of giving him these calming stips- Any leads would be appreciated 😀

The product I am considering is Furlicks Calming Strips.

  • For anyone who owns this squeaky pig toy…

Hello everyone. I just noticed something with one of my dog’s toys today that I wanted to bring to peoples attention. My dog passed way in 2024 and today I noticed the squeaky pig toy she used to play with is disintegrating and goo was coming off of it. It’s been sitting nicely with all of her stuffed animals on her bed and the goo is getting all over everything. It did not look like this when she passed away. She loved this pig and i’m sure many dogs do. My girl played hard, but the toy had no discoloration or cracks, otherwise I would have thrown it away. The goo from this toy is sticking to my girl’s stuffed animals and I have to take pliers to get it off. I just don’t want anyone’s dog ingesting this stuff. I think it might be latex, but I thought latex was durable? I want to show people a picture of this but it won’t allow me to post my photos. Here is a link to a toy that looks like the one I have, but I don’t know if it’s the same exact pig/manufacturer.

  • My mountain cur is getting old, how can I make her feel better?

My girl is getting old. I see her more and more struggling to get up. Shes gotten a bit bigger over the last year. In the last couple months we have had to help her up a few times. She still acts like a puppy, never has accidents, but my wife and I have shared some scared looks in the last year. We dont have a lot of money, and she is about 13 or 14. Shes always been spoiled with a steak bone and always has a yard to play in. Is there anything I can do to make her a bit more comfortable now that shes in her golden years? Ide love to see her hop in the truck like she used too, or at least struggle a bit less to get up. Ive thought about restricting her food intake since the weight is probably playing a role in her mobility, but I dont want her to be miserable if shes only got a couple years left. Shes a mountain cur/golden lab mix, if that helps at all. I just want her to be more comfortable.

  • Reactive dog owners, how do you handle unsolicited advice and not have it bring you down?

Our one year old pup we adopted a year ago after he was found on the side of the highway and then bumped around foster homes. He lacked the basics and is also a herding dog so lots of energy. We have bonded a lot with him and he’s come a long way with our other dog, young child, and cat.

I’ve spent a few months in private training with him. The trainer was really helpful with distance/distraction/duration which we use on walks. She said a lot of his behavior comes from anxiety.

Today we went on a run together which he tends to do better on than walks because it’s like a job for him to match my pace. We came up to an Amazon delivery driver on one side of the road and an older woman walking by herself on the other. I crossed the street with him at a run and opted to run by the Amazon truck. As I’m running by, the woman signals me from across the street and says

“You really should put that dog in training.”

For a second I was dumbfounded and then said “He is in training. Thank you so much!” With a rather sarcastic thank you. We kept on with our run. He didn’t even bark at her, just looked at her as we ran by! This is a situation I would reward him for and should have but I was so distracted. He usually lunges or barks when people stop to talk to us.

I know there’s people out there like this but every walk or run is a training session for us and this was a first for us. Just hoping I never run into this woman again, ugh.
