  • having a tiny struggle getting puppy to go potty outside

i’ve only had her since yesterday but i’m trying to get potty training in gear asap. (she’s 10 weeks old)

i’m trying to take her on no-nonsense “walks” where we stand in one spot so she doesn’t get distracted but it’s been unsuccessful so far. i’ve also tried putting her in spots where there’s dog poop and where i know dogs have peed but she hasn’t been interested. last thing i’ve also tried is 30 mins after food and water but again, doesn’t work.

should i be doing anything else or just repeat this until she goes? and is it possible it’s too cold (about 30°F) for her to want to go potty outside?

  • I ordered a bone for my dog and it came with meat on it and I need to get it off

I bought my dog a bone so he could have something new to chew on and when it arrived it came with pieces of meat and fat on it. Unfortunately he has the stomach integrity of a newborn baby and will not react well to it. Is there a way to get the debris off of it or should I find him another one? Additionally if anyone knows any European pet stores where I can get naked bones for my dog that would be helpful

  • Megathread: Why Does My Dog Do That?

Does your dog turn his head when he hears an odd noise? Does your dog bury their food with your pants? This is the thread to ask why.

  • How did he know he was at the vet?

We rescued a lovely little poodle mix named Teddy. Teddy came into our house and immediately began exploring, demanding pets, and taking over our home and our hearts.

There is one thing that puzzles me. When I took him to the vet for the first time (and he was only ~15mo), the *instant* we walked in, this confident little dog turned into a quivering, shaking ball of terror curled up in my lap.

How could he possibly have known he was at the vet when he’d never been there before and likely only had one or two vet visits previously in his life?

  • Flying with dog from FRA to GRU, some help and advice needed

    Hi everyone,

I’m planning a direct flight from Frankfurt (FRA) to São Paulo / Guarulhos (GRU) with my small dog and would appreciate advice from anyone who’s been in a similar situation.

    Key points:

    • Dog + carrier are below the airline weight limit
    • The challenge is carrier height: she is about 5 cm over at the back, and about 10 cm over at the top of her head when standing
    • She can turn around and lie down comfortably
    • I know some airlines are more flexible, but it often depends on ground staff

    Questions:

    1. What’s the best way to approach ground staff at check-in in a borderline case like this?
    2. Is it better to let them assess quietly, or calmly explain upfront?
    3. If initially denied, is it reasonable to politely ask for a supervisor review?
    4. Any day-of-travel tips that helped increase your chances?

Thanks a lot for any real experiences or suggestions.

  • Our Dog Always Knows When We’re 5 – 10 Minutes From Our Destination…

…even when she’s never been there.

We do a lot of walking with our dog, normally to places that are a 30 – 60 minute drive away. When we are between 5 and 10 minutes from arrival, she starts whimpering and whining in anticipation.

I would say this occurs on pretty much every journey, including places she’s never ever been, and also on longer journeys (for example when we’re going on holiday).

    We’ve discounted the following:

    1. She recognises where we’re going by sight and/or smell (it happens with places she’s never been)
    2. She starts whining after a set amount of time (we see it on journeys of differing lengths, generally 30 – 60 minutes, but also when we’ve done much longer journeys)
    3. She’s familiar with both Waze and Google Maps (she’s smart but we think this is a bit of a stretch)
    4. She hears us talking about being nearly there (we have avoided discussing this on multiple occasions)

Our only theory is that our demeanour and/or smell changes in some perceptible way – is this possible? Any other theories?

She’s a 4 year old Schnoodle. Thanks in advance!

  • Benign Mammary Adenoma

My 6-year-old female dog (intact) had a small bump above one of her nipples, so the vet did a biopsy and spayed her at the same time. The vet just called with the biopsy results and said it’s a benign mammary gland adenoma. They reassured me that the surgery should be curative and that there’s nothing to worry about right now. I should just monitor and keep an eye on it.

I understand that benign means non-cancerous, but I’m still feeling anxious about her. Has anyone else’s dog had a similar experience?
