  • Just keep practicing!

My puppy (10 months now) has always been really excitable when passing other dogs. Thankfully she’s never been a big barker, but she loves to start jumping, lunging, and pulling when another dog is within 15 feet or so on walks. My partner and I have been working with her day in and day out to curb this behavior since adopting her at 3 months and no dice. Until finally. I’m not sure what clicked, but now we can reliably lure her with treats to our side when passing other dogs. No more jumping or pulling.

To anyone out there who is feeling really defeated and like you failed as a dog owner for whatever issue you may be having, stick with it. It WILL get better!

  • How to undo bad training?

Hello again, I have a 16 week old Patterdale-jack cross called Ripley who I can now stand(ish) for.

My partner is stuck using very, very outdated methods to train her when she does something bad (pinning, shouting, kinda hard nose taps, think along those lines) and I've told her it doesn't work and the methods to use instead. The issue is she won't listen since I haven't had a dog before and she's been around them her entire life, 4 lovely dogs who ended up having to go to trainers (shock horror -_-).

The issue is that Ripley was making progress with coming to her name and other basic commands, but since my partner has started this style of training Ripley has backtracked heaps. She doesn't listen, whines and will stand just out of reach and bark aggressively for hours. She doesn't trust treats anymore because they were used to bait her closer so she can be put in her crate.

How do I undo this? I am finally in a position to train her, I can at least stand up now at a hard push and I don't want to give up on Ripley.

  • How should I choose my next dog? I currently have a 10-year-old puppy

In context, three months ago I lost my first companion. She was an excellent puppy; right up until the very end, she was the best. Everyone keeps asking me when I'll get a new puppy, but honestly, I think it's still too soon. I've also heard that it's not a good idea to adopt a newborn to share the space with my 10-year-old dog. Anyway, I'd appreciate any advice, or if anyone has been in the same situation

  • When can I leave the puppy home alone??

My fiance and I adopted a husky-retriever mix about a month ago. We got him when he was 8 weeks. He came with lotsss of parasites and worms, and we have just gotten him feeling better. Our puppy has spent every waking moment near us. We have been doing crate training, which has been going okay. He will take naps in there but ONLY if we sit nearby and wait for him to pass out. If he wakes up and were aren’t nearby he freaks and will non stop bark. We’ve been trying to practice with leaving him for very short increments (5 seconds, 30 seconds, etc) but seem to be stuck at the 1 minute mark for alone time.

He is about to be 13 weeks and I am going insane! I just want to be able to pop out to grab a coffee or go to the other room to do laundry.

    Any advice appreciated!

  • Megathread: Why Does My Dog Do That?

Does your dog turn his head when he hears an odd noise? Does your dog bury their food with your pants? This is the thread to ask why.

Please keep this thread to non-medical issues only.

  • My dog’s strange quirk, that has recently evolved.

My dog, a stray we adopted 9 years ago from the street, always excibited this weird behevior when on walks. Basically he is trying to pee, but he got no more pee. He smells the tree or corner or whatever, then he raises his leg and nothing comes out, because theres nothing to come out. At least this is what he used to do.

Now he started realizing that he didn't mark anything and he tries again and again, until I drag him away, and then moves onto the next thing he tries to mark. One day I decided to just let him keep trying to see how long he would keep at it, and I swear to God, he would keep at it until the heat death of the universe. I sat and waited for him for nearly 10 minutes. For almost 10 minutes he smelled the corner, turned raised his leg and nothing came out, on repeat, until I, again, dragged him away.

I wouldn't count this as a serious behavioral issue, but I am curious to what others think, and of course if I can stop him from doing it.

  • Megathread: Pet Insurance

Which pet insurance is best for you? Are there any that may cover your dog's current treatment? Did your dog get injured during the waiting period and want to know if you're covered?

    Here's the place to ask.

Do know we cannot help you here with medical concerns, and lying or not disclosing things to the insurance company is illegal so we don't allow that either.

  • Anyone have actual reviews for Therapet diffusers?

Ive been considering picking up a Therapet for my Shih Tzu and was curious if it was worth the money for what it says to. Was looking for any positive or negative reviews anyone may have and the experiences with using the product.

    TIA!

  • Do any of you actually track your dog walks?

    Hey,
I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I’m just curious about how other dog owners handle this.
Recently I started wondering if it would be useful to track things like dog walks, places we’ve been, distance, vet visits, mood and similar stuff. Mostly because sometimes after a walk I realize I don’t even remember where exactly we went or how far we walked. So I started thinking about building a simple app just for myself to track those things. But at the same time I’m not even sure if people actually care about this kind of tracking or if most dog owners just go for a walk and that’s it.
For example, there are already some apps that track dog walks and show distance and stats from your walks. But I’m wondering what real dog owners actually do.

Do you track your walks with your dog? Like distance, routes, places visited, etc.
Or do you just go out, enjoy the walk, and not think about tracking anything?
Because sometimes I feel like tracking could be interesting, but other times I’m like… why overcomplicate a simple walk 😀

Curious to hear what you guys do.
