  • Help with a little one..

We have a nine month old that only weighs four pounds. She has decided that getting under the duel recliners or end tables while we have our backs turned is fun. Leg rest down, blockers where we can..She still manages to find a way. Anyone run into this and any advice other than teather her to us or getting rid of the recliners?now committed to not letting her out of our sight, hoping she will grow out of it?

  • 7 month Bernese mountain dog puppy has started biting on walks

    Looking for advice on this.

What happens is we will start the walk off fine, and she does great on the leash. At some point, it seems like she becomes overstimulated or something, and starts to go crazy. She's always been easily overstimulated at some point into the walks and she'll start running around like she has the zoomies. Which we'll take as a cue to chill for a bit before continuing the walk. But now when that happens, she has started full on biting my ankles/arm etc along with the zoomies. They feel like full force bites with head twisting after she latches. I'll try to get her to the ground so she can relax (which is difficult because she is 75 pounds now). After sufficient time, she'll be okay and the rest of the walk goes fine. But this has happened on the last 3 walks now and I'd like to nip it in the bud.

At home she is a very chill non-aggressive puppy. No issues really. Any advice here is helpful!!

  • Chews/chew toys which pass the fingernail test?

What do y'all use for chew toys or edible chews, which pass the "you should be able to indent it with your finger" test? We're not using bully sticks, yak cheese, etc, due to the risk of breaking teeth.

So far, we've tried: various brands of rubber toys (mainly Nylabone and Kong), frozen celery, and frozen Kongs. Our pup gets bored of the rubber toys fairly quickly so we're always rotating them out and eventually buying new ones. He doesn't care for the celery. I'd love to find something more like a bully stick, but soft!

  • Potty and crate training with a newly adopted puppy

Hi everyonee, we just adopted a 5-month-old puppy and it is only our third day with her. We have started potty training and she does well when we take her out regularly, but she has had some accidents at night and we are not sure how to best guide her without scaring or confusing her, when the accidents happen.

But here comes the main issue. We tried crate training on the first night, which in hindsight may have been too early. She did potty outside, but later had a strong stress reaction in the crate, crying non stop and having an accident. We had heard that some crying is part of the process, but this felt very intense and made us wonder if we moved too fast. During the day she goes into the crate willingly and even eats her meals there, but she does not stay in for long. As soon as the door is closed and we are not right next to her, she becomes very distressed and sometimes has an accident. On the second day we tried laying next to the crate with the door closed, but she still could not calm down. She is a shy, sensitive puppy with a shelter background and is also quite attached to me, so we want to be careful not to overwhelm her while still helping her learn.

We would really appreciate any advice on how to approach both potty training and especially crate training in these early days with a rescue puppy.🙏🏻🙏🏻

  • Advice: leaving puppy home

Hi! Have a new puppy, who we love and are working on training etc, however are trying to work around our 9-5 work schedules and would love any advice.

We have got her comfortable sleeping in her bed (inside crate but not closed) and have set up a safe pen area for her with food, water, toys etc. I have a local girl coming over once per day around lunch to take her out to the toilet, cuddle, play etc for an hour or so. To start with this week she is going to come twice (in the am and then afternoon)

I won’t lie, I feel a lot of guilt. Any advice on how we can make her more comfortable, so she doesn’t sit and cry / bark all day until the walker or we come home?

    Thanks!

  • Are 18-20 hours of sleep necessary for 8-week-old?

Hello! I got a JRT 10 days ago (he’s 8 weeks old) and we’ve been having some issues with his sleep schedule. He naps fine during the day if we have him in the couch or in our arms, but he dislikes the kennel and gets whiny when I put him there (once’s he’s asleep), especially at night.

We had an incident on Saturday where he cried more than usual, peed himself, and seemed very stressed, so since then I’ve removed the top of the kennel (no more door) so he feels less confined.

My main concern is sleep amount. He’s only sleeping about 14 hours a day (on Saturday he slept less than 12 hours) and not the recommended 18-20, and he’s very active when awake. I’ve tried enforced naps (1 hour up / 2 hours down) but can’t get him to sleep more than an hour.

Today I took him to the vet and the vet told me this amount of sleep is normal and that all puppies are different, but I’m worried his lack of sleep is what’s making him so active all day (also very bitey). So I wanted to know whats your experiences with puppies that didn’t sleep enough, did it affect your dogs behaviour in the long run? Also, any tips to help puppies settle down and fall asleep when they hate the kennel? Should I just let him sleep with me so he can complete his 18 hours?

Note: Because of what happened on Saturday I’m no longer locking him in the kennel and covering it with a blanket and don’t think I will for a while.

  • Am I the only one who just loves them being puppies??

i see so many posts about people so sad and depressed and having such a hard time. I'm so sorry they have that experience!

for my now 6 month old puppy and the 3 ive had in the past, it was always just a delight and joy to have them as pups! the way they are so eager to learn and play and curious, it brings me so much joy.

i lost my soul dog 6.5 months ago, and got my new baby a couple months later, she of course isnt a replacement but the joy of her and the bonding with her is a balm to me. things she does reminds me of things my lost girl used to do,( and helps me to remember those things that i may have forgotten as i have memory issues. )

yes theres hard moments, frustrating and exhausting, but overall its a positive wonferful time for me and the puppy.

i encourage you all to just enjoy them, try not to worry so bad that they aren't perfect yet, theres plenty of time to train them. this window of being a puppy is so short and special! it is a time to bond, a time for them to learn about you and the world, they will never be this curious and this playful again, so savor the experience. and get help if you can & need it especially during those first couple weeks when they're needy and can be overwhelming.

i want to hear more of the good moments you all have with your puppies.

  • How do I stop my puppy from digging up my entire garden?

My dog is 16 weeks and he just loves digging. We have put stones in the places where he digs to avoid it, but he will just find a new spot. It also means he will sometimes not go pee because he runs right to the digging.
