  • How do you explain normal puppy behaviour to family who’ve never had a puppy?

    Hi all,

I have a 14-week-old puppy (Spaniel x Staffy). She’s currently going through the usual growing stages and is in the middle of teething, so she can be a bit nippy at times.

My family don’t seem to understand that this is a normal part of puppy behaviour. They keep saying I need to “get her under control” before she becomes a bigger dog, which is a bit frustrating because I’m already working on it.

Also, I live alone so it’s not like this is impacting them every day specifically, but more when I share videos of her and she’s a little nippy they’ll comment that I need to be more stern with her.

I redirect her onto appropriate toys and try to manage it as best as possible, but obviously some level of nipping is expected at this age while she’s teething and learning bite inhibition.

Has anyone dealt with similar comments from family who don’t have experience with puppies? Any advice on how to explain that this is a normal stage and that I’m already handling it appropriately?

It’s starting to frustrate me quite a lot.

  • Power Chewer Frenchie – When will it stop?

My frenchie is 1 year and 7 months – a very aggressive chewer. Will he ever grow out of this? He gets plenty of exercise and long walks 2-3x daily before anyone comments.

What toys do you all recommend for extreme chewers? Love to hear everyone's thoughts!

  • My dog has been potty trained for years but all of the sudden has started peeing inside a lot, but always in the same place ???

My dog is 6 years old and she has been potty trained for many years. I lived in a trailer for a while that had very old dirty carpet that she would pee and poop on often, but I think it was because she could still smell other the other animals' scents from the past in that carpet. I have now been in an apartment for nearly 2 years and the whole time we have been here she has not had any issues with peeing or pooping inside outside of the occasional accident when sick or I get stuck out of the house for too long. The last couple months though, she has started peeing inside pretty regularly, sometimes only 10 minutes after I've left the room, always in the same exact place. She has not ever done it in front of me which makes me think it's not a uti. The thing that I'm really stuck on is that it's in the same place every. single. time. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this and what I can do about it ? I've considered getting her a crate again but am hesitant because last time she had a crate she would break out of it and I don't want her to hurt herself.

  • What are some brands of pee pads with strong dog attraction and anti-leak?

My dog have some medical issues with pee holding, and after doing pee pad training, my dog sometimes will pee one to two feet besides the pee pad.

After some asking and research, I have found some possible reasons and solutions.

    1. Pee pads. I recently switched to another brand of pee pads, and I have observed more "pee beside, not inside" behavior, which could be a possible reason. I will switch to another brand as the the old brand is gone on amazon (But accidents also happened before I switched brands ). For my current brand, I am using the 60 pack from amazon basics, and I have noticed the quality was poor compared to the previous brand. It was thin, the edges are not cut open(I have to rip it open myself), but the touch of the pad felt similar.

    2. Kitchen counter, as my dog is always peeing besides the kitchen counter, someone said that my dog could be distracted due to the connection between kitchen counter and food. I cannot change the pee pad location, as that is the only reasonable location. I will try to not feed my dog any food in the kitchen. Which I hope will weaken the connection.

    3. I was suggested that making attractant out of my dog's own urine would help my dog find the location, thus after another puddle of her pee on the floor, I have collected some with toilet paper, and stored it inside an envelope made out of kitchen paper. I am drying it besides my stove right now and will stuff it under the pee pad later.

Please give me some advice on buying pee pads, as I have complete zero knowledge on pee pads. For size, 28 * 34 is the only option as that is the size of the dog pee pad tray I have got(also that is the largest try that could fit inside the place for my dog's "personal toilet". I would like it to have strong attractants as it will help my dog get used to the new pee pads better, also hoping it could at some degree, diminish the distraction from the kitchen counter.

Any general advice would also help.

    Thank you.

  • My dog has randomly started peeing in the house

I got my dog (she’s a rescue) about 9 months ago. When I was on the fence about keeping her one of the deciding factors to keep her was the fact she seemed to already be potty trained. 9 months fly by and no accidents…until this week. She’s had 2 accidents in the last week (4 days apart). What could this be? I thought maybe UTI? However I’ve ruled that out (I can’t say why or this posts get taken down because of subreddit rules). Another factor is my roomate got a new dog about a month ago. They aren’t aggressive towards each other but my dog avoids his dog often. Could my dog be marking her territory? If so why a month later? And do female dogs do this? Has anyone dealt with this before? ANY advice is appreciated.

  • Panting in teenager dogs

Hi! I have a male ~7 months old chow chow and so far he's been everything someone with dogs warns you about regarding how the puppy/teenager phases happen.

However, now that we are approaching the 8 months old I have noticed the behavioral changes (stubborness, regression, etc.) which I was expecting. Everything checks out, except for the fact that he has started panting almost all day, and I was wondering if anyone had also experienced this with their dogs. I haven't noticed any signs of health issues; he eats, poops, plays, etc. as always, except with maybe some energy linked to the teenager phase. (Also as a note, he's an open-face chow chow! I know panting/breathing issues can also be related to shorter snoots or brachycephalic breeds)

    Thank you!!!

  • Where do people in the UK buy non-restrictive dog harnesses?

Hi, I’m from the UK and have a Border Collie. I’m looking for a non-restrictive/Y-shaped harness that doesn’t limit shoulder movement.

Where do people usually buy good ones in the UK? Any brand recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Éducation

    Bonjour,
