  • Cries every 2-3 hours

    Hello,

A couple weeks ago I rescued a 5 month old puppy. Overall he’s doing really well, but I’m working hard on training him.

I’ve been crate training. The first two nights he slept in our room in the crate and cried all night – we ignored him & took him out at different times to go potty.

Now, he sleeps in his crate in our living room, one room away.

The issues I’m having is he cries every few hours. I can’t tell if he wants out, wants attention, or has to go potty. I’m also noticing this while he’s in his play pen. He doesn’t pee/poop in his crate or pen.

He can hold for 4 1/2 hours (at least that’s the longest when I’m working).

I just don’t know what to do or how to help when he cries at 2, then 4, then 7 am…

I’m going to obedience training next Tuesday and this is one of a the few things I’d like to focus on. We’re also going to the vet on Friday, so I’m going to ask her as well.

Any and all kind suggestions would be appreciated!

  • Help! Indoor replacement for Outdoor Fetch

We have an 11 month old Aussie/Goldendoodle mix. When it’s warm, he is the embodiment of ball is life. He will fetch for an hour and then absolutely conk. We live in a high rise in Chicago and fetch is not an option right now because it’s below freezing out. Without it, he’s a monster.

For any other dog parents whose pup loves fetch, have you found any indoor alternatives that engages them or tires them out in the same way? If applicable, links to the products are much appreciated!

  • 14 week puppy growling

I have a 14 week boston terrier puppy and I have 3 others in the home 2 littermate 6 years old and a 2 year old . They all get along besides the little tiffs now and again.

this is where i am starting to see an issue . the puppy will growl at me only with things she should not be doing so if I try to tell her no from digging a hole and will bark then growl at me . my husband seems to think because we have 3 other dog's she doesnt know what is what . the 2 year old never growled at me and the litter mates did a few times when moving them to put into the kennel. it startles me and I do not like the growling . I am unsure what to do . she does not growl over food or toys .

  • Megathread: Pet Insurance

Which pet insurance is best for you? Are there any that may cover your dog's current treatment? Did your dog get injured during the waiting period and want to know if you're covered?

    Here's the place to ask.

Do know we cannot help you here with medical concerns, and lying or not disclosing things to the insurance company is illegal so we don't allow that either.

  • Booties for ice cold medium size very active dog

My dog started having problems with the cold, ice in the park today. Was okay to walk there on sidewalk. What botties can I get her that will stay on. Runs on trails and fields in urban park so also on side walk as well. Today she started limping and looking miserable when we got to icy ttrail.

I am cleaning her paws very well after going outside in case of salt.

  • Paw boo-boo

Evening! My Frankie pankie basically peeled a bit of his paw pad off- a little bleeding but other than that it doesn’t seem to bother him

How can I ensure no infetion? We already called out vet she said it wasn’t concerning enough for him to need to come in.

    As of now

    1. He’s had a good bath plus paw cleaning with a lil vinegar (extra stinky boy before this happened)

    2. We added paw balm that specified for hotspot and wounds too

    3. He’s not really limping or slowing down so it obviously isn’t hurting him

    He’s currently wearing a sock :/

  • Vet bill

We have a 10-11 year old lab mix who takes half 20 mg prednisone every day but is otherwise healthy. We can’t go in for an annual for under $500. This is most recent bill. Is this normal??

  • How do I size my dog for shoes

35lb M puggle. The last time I got shoes they were too big. He already doesn't love shoes but I'm worried for his paws so he has to deal. Should I get those little crocs or something? I found a baby mitten on the sidewalk and actually had some success with my dog walking normally in it until he flung it off. TIA

  • Dog no longer interested in high value treats for self soothing?

I have two dogs, 2 years old, shih-tzu/chihuahua mix. When my husband and I need to put them in a separate room to clean or something for maybe an hour, we give them kongs filled with dog safe peanut butter, maybe a dental treat, just really good treats compared to the smaller training treats they might usually have. This normally keeps them completely at peace, and has done so for the entire time we have had them.

Well, I'm not sure what happened, but *one* of the dogs has decided he does not care. He gets excited for the treat… until the door is closed. He will go to the door and whine and cry like he has been abandoned. Important to note as well that they are perfectly calm when we leave them alone in the house. He is only upset when we are *in* the house but not *with* him. He won't eat the treat until the door is opened so sometimes the other dog eats both, which I also don't want, and I end up having to interrupt what I'm doing multiple times to try and calm him down and take his treat off the other dog.

I'm just not sure where this sudden, specific separation anxiety has come from? We never leave them in there for longer than an hour, hour and a half. They have water, they go potty before and after, they have toys, and they have treats that they love.

I'm just at my wits end a bit, we have switched up the kong fillings multiple times to try and make them more interesting to him, but he only wants it if he knows he's not locked away. The strangest thing is that, he will *choose* to go hide in his crate and eat it, he won't want to sit with us and eat it. He just doesn't want the door to the room closed!

Does anyone have advice to keep him more occupied? I need to be able to have at least an hour a week where we can put them in a separate room without hearing him cry, scream or howl. This has literally never been a problem before, and we have tried many times just ignoring him so he will understand we are not rewarding the whining, but he does not get tired of it.

  • Concernened

Hi everyone. Starting in the early afternoon my dog Max has been acting very weird and out of character. He is normally bouncy and energetic when we go for walks or when he gets a treat, or just whenever I play around with him.

He won’t eat a treat just now but earlier he ate one. He’s drinking water, and did go to the bathroom on our walk and his poop seemed pretty normal, maybe a tad soft.

The most concerning is that he is just standing there staring off into space the whole time now. He went into the closet a few minutes ago and I had to coax him out. I did get him some OTC tummy medication called “Homepet Digestive Relief” because I thought he might have a stomach issue. Not sure if it helped.

I was going to give it a little time and take him to the vet in the morning but do yall think I should go to the emergency vet?

    He is 7 years old.
