My partner and I just got a new puppy four days ago (border collie x lab) and she’s the cutest little thing.
She used to sleep with her brothers, sisters and mum outside, so she always had someone around.
For sleeping, we’ve decided to keep her in our laundry, to give her enough space, particularly as we’ll need to keep her there when we go to work.
We have a small bed, a blanket underneath, a chewy toy and soft toy, and and a small bowl of water.
Our night time routine consists of calm play, rest time, potty, then going to bed.
She naps okay in the day, especially when we’ve put her in the laundry, however has not been coping at night. She barks, scratches on the door, howls and whines. We think it’s a mixture of distress and whining, as her heart is sometimes racing when we go in (which we only EVER do when there’s a moment of silence). When we take her out for potty, she will go, but when she goes back in it takes about 5 minutes before she’s barking again.
One time we went in and she tried to play. Last night, we took her to bed and I sat with her for 5 minutes to soothe her before I left. That was better, as she went to bed for about 30 minutes, but started right back up after that.
Our other concern is that all this barking will lead to a complaint/check in from the neighbours.
Honestly, I’m really quite anxious about all of this and am assuming I’ve done something wrong, I just don’t know what. I’ve raised family puppies before and done some research, and it’s always gone really smoothly.
I’d try crate training in our room, but then she’d have no room if we left her for a few hours to go to work, which would make me feel a bit bad.
I just need help or ideas if anyone has some, please. I’m
