Approx 4 year old dog. Dna test says 65% staffie, 10% bulldog, 25% mastiff. Shelter rescue, ive had him about 5 months. He was in the shelter for 2 months before I got him, and was neutered during that stay. I was told hed had one home before us, with a bunch of children and other dogs. No behavioral issues observed during his stay
He is the second dog in the home, I got a 1 year old female thats staffy/bullmastiff mix. She is 100% bossing him around princess style, but he has been super chill about it, even when she bit him once early on, he just looked at me like.. "help please" and remained calm while I dealt with it.
He has also been quite friendly to other new dogs and humans that have visited the home. Even tolerant of kids who are still learning touch boundaries.
Usually hes a super lover. His biggest desire is to lay his head on a humans chest and stare adoringly at them. Preferably me, but my girlfriend is a very acceptable second option. Or my sister. Or my cousin. Etc.
One little hitch that I am trying to figure out. Approximately 5 times over 5 months, he has seemingly inexplicable growled at my girlfriend. Twice today.
All of these incidents he is starting in his usual posture, seated next to her or in front of her on the couch, facing her. He was recently receiving pets and affection, and his posture indicates he is engaged and wants more. No apparent tension.
Shes reaching to continue pets, and suddenly hes growling. Not imediate danger, but it doesnt sound friendly. No snarl, no snap. Body is still loose. Head dropped a bit, which is usual for him when he wants pets, but also looks a bit like submission/fear to me.
And seconds later he is wanting to lay in her lap and get loves again.
Its kinda baffling to me. Im looking for a trainer locally, but id apreciate thoughts or advice in the meantime.
