Potty and crate training with a newly adopted puppy

Hi everyonee, we just adopted a 5-month-old puppy and it is only our third day with her. We have started potty training and she does well when we take her out regularly, but she has had some accidents at night and we are not sure how to best guide her without scaring or confusing her, when the accidents happen.

But here comes the main issue. We tried crate training on the first night, which in hindsight may have been too early. She did potty outside, but later had a strong stress reaction in the crate, crying non stop and having an accident. We had heard that some crying is part of the process, but this felt very intense and made us wonder if we moved too fast. During the day she goes into the crate willingly and even eats her meals there, but she does not stay in for long. As soon as the door is closed and we are not right next to her, she becomes very distressed and sometimes has an accident. On the second day we tried laying next to the crate with the door closed, but she still could not calm down. She is a shy, sensitive puppy with a shelter background and is also quite attached to me, so we want to be careful not to overwhelm her while still helping her learn.

We would really appreciate any advice on how to approach both potty training and especially crate training in these early days with a rescue puppy.🙏🏻🙏🏻
