Thoughts on Play Pen at Night?

What’s everyone’s thoughts and advice on using a play pen at night vs locking in a crate? Right now I have a 10 month old puppy that sleeps in his crate in my bedroom, but I want to transition to him sleeping in the living room alone.

Would it be ok to have him sleep in his play pen with the crate door open and access to potty pad? During the day I have that set up but without a potty pad. I’m really trying to get him used to sleeping alone as well as sleeping in. When he sleeps in my room he wakes me up at 6am every morning.
