Our dog is a rescue, so we don't know her actual birthday (but then again, she doesn't know it either). The rescue organization put down a date of January 10th, so that's when we celebrate. We sing happy birthday, put a hat on her if we have one handy, and give her a delicious once-a-year kind of treat, like a hamburger or a piece of steak.
As it happens, though, my son's birthday is January 11th and mine is January 18th. So the day after we sing the birthday song, and it's fresh in her mind, we sing it again the next day, but it brings no treats or special attention. And then again, a week later! After that, there are no more family birthdays until August, and then there's one in November. But just when she's forgotten the song, we get back to January, and it all begins again…
