Need advise, kids want a dog, Wife and I both work,

My wife and I have 3 kids ages 3, 5, & 6 and they have been begging for a dog for a while now. The problem is my wife and I both work and we are away from the house 8 hours a day 3-4 days a week. We feel bad leaving a member of the family alone for that amount of time. Is there a feasible way of getting a dog with our schedule? We are thinking of getting a Lab or lab mix. We live in the suburbs and have a backyard with grass.
