Hi everyone! I recently adopted a (now) 14wk old German shepherd. I love him to bits and grew up with GSDs so I do have experience with the breed. However, he is my first puppy and the first dog I have personally adopted. I enrolled him in a puppy socialization and training course that starts in a couple of weeks and I am absolutely terrified he will be the least trained/worst behaved dog there.
He knows sit and lay down (these are the only commands he’ll do with no food incentive). We’re making amazing progress with crate and potty training. And I have just started training him the “leave it” command and recall. With this being said, he still play bites, he really only listens when he wants to (when he knows food is involved), he loses all training when meeting someone new or playing with another dog, he’s not leash or walk trained at all (he’s not fully vaccinated yet so I carry him everywhere), he still jumps on people when he’s excited, and I have no idea how he’ll act around 3-5 other puppies and new people.
I know it’s probably just my anxiety talking and we’re literally going to a training class but I see all these videos of amazingly trained puppies and can’t help but feel behind. We train for 5-10mins multiple times a day but I have no idea what else I should be teaching him. Am I behind in something? Should he know something that I don’t even know about? Is there something he NEEDS to have mastered before this class?
This might just be taken as more of a venting post but honestly any advice is is really appreciated!
