How can I adopt a bulldog in the MI/OH area in the next few months without going to a breeder?

I have been looking into getting an english bulldog lately, but there aren't really options unless you want to go to a breeder. We have applied to Detroit Bulldog Rescue, but there's also a lot of demand there and we haven't heard back. I would really love to get my SO the dog she's always wanted for Christmas; I just feel terrible going to a breeder when I know there are so many dogs in shelters. Do I have another option?
