Dog with alopecia and dry skin

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for some tried and true lotions, supplements, sprays, conditioners, anything for dogs with dry skin! We recently took in a dog that was dumped on our property. We did some digging trying to find the owner, and instead we found the shelter where he came from. We got his medical records and found out he most likely has color diluted alopecia (he is a 3ish y.o. blue/white weimaraner mix according to the shelter.) He is also heartworm positive so he is on doxy, and I'm not sure if that might contribute to the dry skin. We have only had him for about 3 weeks now, and the previous owner will not answer despite several attempts of contacting them, so we don't know if this is his norm. The temp in my area has dropped significantly in that time and now his skin is flaky and dry. Any recommendations would be super helpful! I have done some google searches but found very mixed reviews on so many products. If anyone has had any similar issues with dry, flaky skin on their pup, I would love to know what yall have used that really works! It's mostly on his lower back area near his tail, so we need something that won't make him sick if he licks it. He definitely will.
