Puppy potties out of distress when I leave

I was wondering if this is normal. My puppy is somewhat okay with me out of the house for a few minutes at a time if crated with a frozen kong. However, when he is out of the crate and in his playpen, when I simply leave the room to go to the bathroom myself, in the 30 seconds I'm gone, he immediately cries, barks, and pees/poops himself out of distress. He's pretty good at being potty trained otherwise, so I know it's out of distress. I'm curious if this is normal – will he start to feel more secure as he gets used to my absence while in his crate and will this translate to him feeling safe out of the crate for the 30 seconds I want to go pee and not have to crate him?
