Hoping for some guidance on helping my rescue pup gain the confidence to be alone! She is 6 months old and I just rescued her last week (she has been in the house for only 10 days), so I’m not sure if this truly is separation anxiety yet or just the start of it as she’s still adjusting to being in her forever home <3.
She sleeps through the night completely fine in her crate (alone in a different room in the house where she can still hear us); no whining unless she has to go outside to go potty (then we put her right back in the crate and she goes right back to sleep).
If we crate her and we leave the house, she goes crazy and won’t stop whining & pacing around in her cage. This happens both day and night (so even if it’s right at bed time and we put her in the crate like she’s going to bed, if she hears us leave she cries. Haven’t done this for more than 20 minutes as we didn’t want to traumatize her, so unsure if she would eventually settle after 30+ minutes maybe). Also, if I leave the house and she’s home with my partner (outside of the crate), she cries/paces for a short while but can eventually settle herself.
Long term I would LOVE to allow her to roam freely when we leave the house, but since she just nailed down potty training & given the above we aren’t ready to try that yet.
Any insight into if this is early stages of separation anxiety? If so, what should we start doing to help our pup thrive and gain confidence?
