Hey everyone,
My wife and I are first time dog owners and we have a lovely dachshund – 10 weeks old and we have had her for 2 weeks. Both of us are working from home which might not help with creating enough space between us and her.
Did a lot of research before getting her and we are trying everything that the internet recommends to get our girl to settle. Crate training, sleeping next to her, training her to be ok by herself, and although some progress has been made overall, feels like 0 progress when it comes to sleeping.
Crate training – daily serving meals in there (she is quite used to that). treats and games also in the crate. The second she sees the treats bag she knows she has to go in the crate. She sometimes even walks in by herself for a second so she is definitely ok with it. When she is sleepy and falls asleep in our arms, we try to put her in there. At night we try to keep the crate on the bedside table as close to us as possible. At one point we even had a travel crate between us in the bed (which slightly worked better). Seems that we are trying and partially doing everything that is recommended and still very little progress.
Now the problem from my pov comes from her lack of sleep. She is not yet fully vaccinated, so she gets very little outside time.
She will only, like 100% of the time fall asleep only in our arms or next to us, and if we do not allow that she will just not sleep for 5-6 hours at a time until we give up. We do try and put her in the crate when she does fall asleep and sometimes it works for like 30 min then she walks out or cries, or instantly walks out.
Same will happen at night. She might stay in her crate for the first 2-3 hours of the night until the first potty break, then no way in hell I can keep her in there without a whole symphony.
What i am looking for I guess is some practical help around enforcing naps which we havent done, or simply some advice on letting her sooth herself in the crate during the day which will involve a lot of crying I'm sure which we have not quite permitted yet.
Wife and I are struggling and sleep deprived and if we are able to fix the sleep, honestly we would have a great puppy but currently the fear of sleeping with her in the bed, her falling off etc, is just keeping our anxiety levels super high and we cannot sleep.
TLDR – puppy just sleeps in our arms during the day and in the bed at night, and apart from letting her cry herself to sleep I feel we have tried everything with very little success and we are slightly hating our experience right now even if we bloody love the little thing.
