House Training Rescue Puppy

Long time lurker, first time poster

Two weeks ago to the day, my husband and I adopted a sweet 6 months old Lab mix puppy, Sir Percival of the Round Table aka Percy. According to the rescue we got him from, he was locked in an abandoned house with little to no food for weeks. Due to this, he developed severe mange and was completely malnourished. However, despite everything, he is such a loving and playful dog.

The biggest problem we are currently having is house training. At 6 months old, he is still not house trained. Although we are making progress, he still poops or pees in the house at least 2-3 times a day. He doesn’t alert us or let us know he needs to go, he simply does his business. We are currently giving him treats right after he goes to the bathroom outside trying to incentivize that behavior. We are also letting him out every hour. But it’s still not working. My personal theory is that since he was living in an abandoned house for so long, he has trained himself to go indoors rather than out.

We have no intention of giving him up because of this, I’m just having a hard time seeing the end of the tunnel. I worry that this will be our reality going forward with no improvement. If anyone has any advice, please please pass it along. Thank you in advance!
