Hello people, as the title says, my shih tzu is 7.5 months now, but he came with a pre built biting manual from 8 weeks old. I genuinely believe it was never about teething with him (which he finished already), because it’s been constant hell since day one, and I really need advice.
He has two types of biting, general biting where he thinks it’s okay to put his teeth on my hands. Crazy biting which he gets into as if he’s possessed, where the more I resist, the crazier he gets (might be a game for him).
I take care of him (80% of the effort), but Inconsistencies exist as we’re a big family, and he also goes to daycare. No matter how hard I try to keep everyone on the same page, it doesn’t pan out. I also am not sure how daycare employees tolerate biting, they might invite the playfullness of it.
Things I’ve tried that I agree with: – stand up, ignore (he then focuses on ankles). – timeout (I dont think he gets it) – keeping my hand still in his mouth until he gets bored and stops. – put toy in his mouth right away and draw attention to it.
Things I’ve tried that might not be accepted on this sub: – pinch his lower jaw when he does it (normally works and he starts licking me instead, but clearly not working long term)
Info about day to day: Gets sufficient naps (14-17 hour sleep per day) , crate trained, plays tug, walks, enritchement kongs in crate, meals are fed through puzzles and lick mats, sniffing games, training commands.
Other issues: trained on pads so still pees on carpets, barking fits, eats everything in sight from ground (leaves, acorns, feathers, etc), cannot be left unsupervised due to biting furniture and everything in site (he’s always bored and cannot settle, despite enritchment).
Housebreaking has just been a nightmare, compared to other stories where puppies seem so well integrated into a home and chilling.
