Tips on settling a crate trained puppy outside of the crate?

I have a 12-week-old English Cocker Spaniel who’s taken really well to crate training, he sleeps through the night and does great with enforced naps (usually up for about an hour, then naps in the crate for 2–3 hours). He can even stay in there for 4 hours no problem which helps when working.

The challenge is that we can’t always stick to such a strict schedule, and there are times when he needs to be awake longer or at different times. When he’s out of the crate, he’s constantly “on”, very go-go-go. He doesn’t stay engaged with toys for long (maybe 30 seconds of tug, then a bit of chewing before losing interest), but he’s very food-motivated and will happily go to his mat expecting treats or training.

I’m looking for tips on how to teach him to settle outside of the crate. Since he strongly associates the crate with sleep, it’s been tough to get him to relax or stay calm when he’s out.
