When we go to my office, I always give my dog three treats (jerky). The first he takes from my hand while I throw the other two on his bed. He eats them all, does a couple of sniffs on and around his bed looking for crumbs, drinks some water, and then lays down.
The other day, I only threw one treat on his bed while he ate the first one. I did this because the first two I grabbed from the bag were unusually large, total mass easily exceeding the mass of the three he usually gets. After he ate the second one, he was furiously sniffing every square inch of the office.
When I gave him a total of two, he thought one was missing and went on a thorough search for it.
That seems like counting to me.
