Dog acting unusual at night?

As of a few days ago, my dog (shepherd / lab mix, male, think around 8?) has been acting very odd at night. He suddenly becomes very clingy and will follow you literally anywhere, he really wants to jump into literally any bed in the house, and he's panting a lot despite seemingly having no reason to. Occasionally when locked in his kennel, he'll stratch at the door or open it to run to find someone. He's never done this before nor does he act this way during the day. Any ideas what might be happening?
