My 3 month old poodle mix (he's a rescue, I suspect some schnauzer/terrier in there) has been amazing with his house training. At night, I take him outside at 10PM and 2AM to go potty and at least one of those times he has to poop. I live in a rural area and his most used poop spot is basically the furthest point in my yard from my house – a small yard but my motion lights don't reach that far, and I'm always worried about an animal popping out of the woods and selfishly, wanting to stay close to the house so he has less runway to sniff and get distracted especially at 2 AM!
So, I'm trying to get him to change his pooping spot to be closer to the house. If I move his poops to a new spot, will that work to get him to poop there instead of his usual spot? I tried this when we started potty training – moving his poops from inside to outside to try to establish the smell, etc. and it really didn't work. I've also tried to get him to start pooping in a new spot, but so far to no avail – at the end of the day I'm just happy that he is learning that he should be pooping outside so he gets treats and a celebration as long as he's outside. He will pee wherever so that isn't an issue. Anyone have any luck or tips in moving a poop spot?
