Hey guys, looking for some advice on my new pup. I adopted him yesterday and he’s amazing. He’s about 2 months old so just a pup. He’s a black Labrador retriever. Got him a nice big crate, crate pillow, large fluffy bed and all the bowls and snacks and fixings he needs.
First night last night he would only last maybe 3-4 hours alone in his crate asleep before crying and pouting enough to wake me up and go to him to comfort him. First time he was hungry so I just sat next to him watching him eat and drink. He then fell asleep so I put him back in his crate. Went back to sleep. 2 hours later, same thing but this time he had to go pee. Cleaned him up and played with him a bit. Fell asleep on his pillow and decided to put him back in his crate. He woke up and started pouting pretty bad and biting the bars of the crate to try to jiggle it open. I was able to slowly leave the room and now he’s quiet and relaxing as I type this, with a few pouts here and there.
My question is: should I keep consistent on ignoring his pouting while in the crate to raise his comfort of being in the crate for longer periods of time? Should I still go check on him each time he starts to pout? Should I reward with treats the longer he stays in the crate? Any advice is welcomed. This is my first puppy that I care for completely on my own. Thank you!
