Advice for barking during people mealtimes?

Hello! We’ve got an almost 5 month old basset/beagle puppy. For about a week or so his barking whenever a person is eating something has gotten loud and persistent. I’ve tried crating with a high value treat while eating but we’re still working on crate comfort and he only lasts calmly in his crate between 5 and 15 min. We’ve tried a good long lasting chew while we eat and that works some of the time. I’ve taken to putting him on our covered deck outside so that the barking is atleast a little quieter. And usually he barks a few times up to a minute or so and then finds something to sniff in the yard. Oh and I’ve tried him having his dinner at the same time again with mixed success.

Any advice? We have young kids and he has been rewarded inadvertently with food drops from the dinner table in the past months.

If anyone has any resources they love on handling general barking that would be great too!
