I am 31F female with my 4.5yr old male golden retriever Bug. Bug is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Bug and I live alone but basically his entire life before this, there were other animals in the home (either a cat or dog or both). He LOVED it, especially with other dogs who were just as playful. He would spend all day playing with the other dog/s and it just made him so happy to have someone else to play with consistently.
I went through a breakup and although he’s okay, Bug is definitely sad he’s an only dog now. I would like to rescue another dog so he can have a playmate, but I have no idea where to start. I don’t want a puppy, I just cannot be home as often as I need to for that. I do want a dog healthy and playful enough to keep up with him. I am a field social worker and have pretty flexible hours/make okay money but I do need to spend half a day at a time away from my apartment (work hours!) I live in NYC so I don’t have a yard but live near plenty of parks.
Bug is a gigantic guy (90 pounds and a healthy weight for his height) but very submissive. I’ve see him submit to a 3 month old dachshund before, and that’s pretty much in line with how he acts in general. He’s my first dog and he’s perfect but ideally I’d like to have two dogs at a time about 5 years apart so they always have someone to play with.
I just have no idea what to look for in a rescue, nor have I ever rescued a dog before. How do I know what dog would be a good match for my home/Bug? I have no idea where to even start. I would like a smaller dog, have no breed preferences or anything, but other than that I have no idea.
