I have a 5 year old mini dachshund who will sit next to her empty food bowl, sometimes for hours at a time. If you try to pick up her empty bowls for any reason, she will quickly hover her head over the bowl or jab her snout at you (no growling or biting). If she sees anyone walk towards her bowl, she’ll come running from the living room to protect it. Occasionally she will lunge and snap (no actual biting) at our other dog if he comes near her bowl as well.
We have never taken her bowl from her before except to wash it and we don’t mess with her while eating, so I’m not exactly sure what would’ve caused this behavior. As far as I can remember she’s always sat by her empty bowl to protect it which was never really an issue, but only more recently has she started jabbing her snout at us and snapping at our other dog.
Would it be best to put her bowl up after eating, or would this make the issue worse by making her feel as though she needs to protect it even more? Any advice is appreciated!
