Hi all! I rescued a 7 week old boarder collie mix. She was throw in a box on the side of the road, transported a few states away, went to a foster with her sister and now she has been here for about ten days. Underweight & scared. I have had dogs all my life and lost my 12 year old soul dog not too long ago. She sleeps great in a pen in my room at night without issues. I have gated her in my main living area so she only has access to the kitchen & main living room. We are working on potty training be she came to me on pee pads which I never used before. Nightmare. I am home all day but transitioning to a senior dog who knew the drill to a puppy is nuts. This puppy is high energy and a biter and I guess you could say destructive.
Definitely comfortable now and coming out of her shell.
My question is now that I have seen her warm up and feel safe and figured her out a little, I want to crate her during the day. I don't know where to start or what to do. She is super smart but just more destructive than dogs passed lol. She also has fomo loc she only takes mini naps during the day but can differentiate when it's dark bc at night she winds down and starting around 8PM she is sleeping and will sleep until 7AM. Sounds great right? I can't have this puppy under my feet all day and feel longer naps would be good for both of us. I know she isn't a confident queen just yet but this is also my first girl dog and she has been through a lot and is like my shadow so I am trying to give her some grace. All my male dogs were confident kings and this one is going to be a challenge. I am okay with her crying it out, etc. and know to make it a safe space but how do you start? Do you cover the crate, ideally I want to put the crate in my main living space and go about the things I need to do but do I shut the door and do what l need to do and then let her out? I am not even sure how to start. Then I feel like a loser bc I am home all day and this shouldn't be an issue but she is right there every second and getting into everything no matter how much I think I have secured the area lol. Any advice is appreciated!!!
