What dog breeds work well for people with busy schedules?

I'm thinking about getting a dog and wanted to hear from people with experience.

I work pretty often, so I'm looking for a breed that isn't extremely high-maintenance or needing constant trips outside. Obviously I would still make sure the dog gets proper care, exercise, and attention — I just want something that fits a busier schedule.

Any breed suggestions or advice from people in a similar situation?
